Description
Navigant Biotechnologies is developing techniques to improve the safety of the blood supply by reducing the pathogens found in donated blood. The unique Mirasol Pathogen Reduction Technology (PRT), from Navigant Biotechnologies applies light and riboflavin to alter the nucleic acids and proteins of pathogens, rendering them inactive. This is the first single technology that has been shown to inactivate pathogens in all three major blood components: red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
Company Profile
Founded in 2002, Navigant Biotechnologies is a wholly owned subsidiary of
Gambro, Inc., global leader in renal care, healthcare services, and
blood-component technologies. In 1998, Gambro subsidiary, Gambro BCT, started a
research program applying riboflavin to collected blood cells to inactivate
pathogens, with the ultimate goal being an increased level of blood safety.
Since that time, rigorous research and development have been pursued to
demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of the compound. Most recently, Gambro
established Navigant Biotechnologies as a separate company to better capture the
full potential of its innovative pathogen reduction technology.
