An intelligent cars

The Israelis Oleg Goldshmidt, Dan Chevion and their team of engineers carry out research in IBM Haifa Research Lab in order to equip the technological cars of systems allowing them to reduce the obstructions and the road accidents. An intelligent cars could exchange information with other vehicles, with the road infrastructures, to make corrective actions of control and to provide a return to the driver enabling him to avoid the dangerous situations.

Applications such as the automatic transmission, the brakes anti-locking, or the control speed are today standard applications which equip the cars. Research of this team of 4 people will relate to algorithms and the way of communicating with shared resources of the type of the road intersections on the one hand [according to Goldshmidt whatever the intelligence of the vehicle, it is the conductive which remains with the orders. The human being is always better than electronics to analyze the complex situations. ], and on the interface of exchange enters the vehicle and the driver in addition [according to Chevion: We do not think of transforming the drivers into pilots who must answer a multitude of panels with the audio-visual signals. That must remain rather simple but we want to exploit the fact all the same that a vehicle could know before the driver that the car of front stopped. That changes completely gives it intuition.

The United States the road accidents cost 230 billion dollars per annum, 160 billion in Europe, such programs would improve the road safety.

About The Researcher:
Oleg Goldshmidt IBM Research Division, Haifa Research Laboratory, University Campus, Mount Carmel, Haifa 31905, Israel (olegg@il.ibm.com). Dr. Goldshmidt received his Ph.D. degree in physics from Tel Aviv University in 1995. He headed development of the industry-leading option pricing products for Bloomberg L.P., now widely used in the world financial markets. Dr. Goldshmidt subsequently created and led the Algorithm Research and Development Group at Comgates Ltd., developing a novel architecture and advanced algorithms for quality of service provisioning for real-time applications in next-generation networks. He later led research and development of algorithms and software for protection against distributed denial of service attacks, based on real-time analysis of network traffic, in his capacity as Director of Development for a small start-up company. In 2002 Dr. Goldshmidt joined the Storage and Systems Department at the IBM Haifa Research Laboratory, where he works on development of novel computer system architectures, including Blue Gene/L.
