Development board eases digital SMPS designs

Product Name: Development board eases digital SMPS designs

Product Description

Chandler, Ariz.—Microchip Technology's dsPICDEM buck switchmode power supply (SMPS) development board comes with sample software and tutorial to help designers quickly evaluate and develop their digital SMPS and power-conversion designs. At the core of the board is the company's dsPIC30F2020 digital signal controller (DSC), supported by a suite of development tools as well as a series of educational WebSeminars on digital SMPS-related topics (click here. "This new board and supporting development tools enable designers to enjoy the performance, cost, reliability and time-to-market advantages associated with digital power-conversion applications today," said Sumit Mitra, vice president of the Digital Signal Controller Division. The dsPIC30F2020 DSC implements two of four possible independent, synchronous buck converter designs to allow designers to examine digital-power control techniques as well as application performance benchmarks such as transient response. On-board user potentiometers enable simulation of application features such as trim, remote-voltage sense, voltage tracking and current sharing. The board includes hands-on digital power-conversion training exercises and example buck-converter software (on a CD) to help designers quickly adapt digital power to their designs. Microchip offers its high-performance MPLAB IDE Integrated Development Environment, MPLAB C30C Compiler, SIM 30 Software Simulator, MPLAB ICD2 In-Circuit Debugger, and the MPLAB REAL ICE emulation system to support development. The MPLAB IDE is available free of charge (click here). The MPLAB ICD2 In-Circuit Debugger, MPLAB C30C Compiler, SIM 30 Software Simulator and MPLAB REAL ICE emulation system can be purchased online. The dsPICDEM development board (Part #DM300023) will be priced at $149.99 each; it's being offered now at an introductory price of $99 until December 20 (use promotional code SMPS99). Samples of the dsPIC30F1010 and dsPIC30F2020/2023 DSCs are available (click here). The digital signal controller ICs are priced from $2.99 each in 10,000-unit quantities. The dsPIC30F1010 is available in 28-pin SOIC, SPDIP and QFN packages; the dsPIC30F2020 in 28-pin SOIC, SPDIP and QFN packages; and the dsPIC30F2023 in 44-pin TQFP and QFN packages. Two dsPICDEM starter boards (28-pin DM300017, 80-pin DM300019) are also available to support the dsPIC30F1010 and 2020/2023, respectively. In addition, a plug-in module is available to support the dsPIC30F2023. The starter boards are priced at $79 each and the plug-in module is $25. Click here for purchasing.
