Bridgewater, NJ—Enpirion's second-generation step-down DC/DC power converter families with integrated inductors, the 3-amp EN533x and 6-amp EN536x, tout improved thermal performance and efficiency, lower ripple and noise, and a 25 percent reduction in footprint over competing solutions. "These new (0.8-3.3 volt) 3- and 6-amp converters deliver benchmark performance and highest power density at the time when space-constrained customers with demanding loads need it most," said Paul Greenland, VP of Marketing and Applications. Smaller footprint The company's initial 1-amp DC/DC converter product touted up to 70 percent reduction in converter footprint over competing solutions. These second-generation products, which deliver 10 and 20 watts (3-, 6 amp converters, respectively) from a 2.37- to 5-volt input, claim a 25 percent reduction in area over the competition. Increased efficiency The converters' integrated MOSFET switches have been optimized to provide up to five percent higher efficiency over competing modules. Enhanced thermal performance These second-generation products have a new mold-array processed lead-frame packaging that uses the lead frame and exposed bottom slug as part of the circuit. This technique facilitates low-loss and low-inductance connections. Thus the package can deliver full output to +85°C without forced air cooling, according to the company. Low noise and low ripple As CMOS geometries trend towards 95 nm and below, internal circuits become more sensitive to supply voltage ripple and noise. Up to this point, chip-set customers have found it necessary to increase output filter capacitance significantly in order to prevent nuisance resets when using conventional regulator or controller-plus-switch solutions. The new converters satisfy the requirement with a standard filter. Ease of design The EN533x and the EN536x require two multi-layer ceramic filter capacitors and one soft-start timing capacitor. Output voltage is programmed via a 3-pin voltage ID for the EN5335QI and the EN5365QI, and by an external resistor divider for the EN5336QI and the EN5366QI. Up to four 6-amp converters may be paralleled.
