Sunnyvale, Calif.—Maxim says its MAX16818 is the first high-power, fast-response PWM controller/driver for LEDs suited for advanced projection and lighting applications.
The controller, which provides sufficient drive for (external) 30-amp power MOSFETs, meets the transient requirements of next-generation LED displays (20 A/microsecond, 30 kHz dimming). The chip features synchronous gate-drive circuitry, average-current-mode control to minimize heatsinking requirements for the external MOSFET, and a wide switching-frequency range (125 kHz to 1.5 MHz, allowing the use of smaller capacitors and inductors) to accommodate the 5-200 watt lighting requirements for portable and pocket projectors, home theater systems, rear-projection TVs, and automotive and industrial lighting fixtures. An internal regulator enables operation over a wide input-voltage range (4.75 to 5.5 volts, 7 to 28 volts, or higher with a simple external biasing device).
The MAX16818 features a clock output with 180 degree phase delay to control a second out-of-phase LED driver, which reduces the required size of the input and output filter capacitors and minimizes ripple currents. The chip also offers programmable hiccup-mode over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection.
