Dallas—Texas Instruments says its PTH08T240F 10-amp (non-isolated) power module has the required transient response characteristics to meet the 3 percent accuracy core voltage tolerance spec of TI's newest 3-GHz digital signal processors (DSPs), such as the TMS320TCI6487, with just 3,000 microfarads of external output capacitance.
The device, working from a 4.5-14 volt input and with an adjustable output from 0.7 to 2 volts, also supports point-of-load systems that use high-performance DSPs, microprocessors, ASICs and FPGAs.
This module, says TI, is the first to meet the core voltage tolerance requirements of TI's new TCI6487 DSP, which requires a core voltage rail between 0.9 and 1.1 volts with a source impedance of 2 milliohms. The regulator meets the TCI6487's voltage tolerance requirement of 15 mV for transient loads of up to 5 amps. More specifically, the chip incorporates TurboTrans technology for optimizing the power module's transient response and reducing the amount of output capacitance by up to eight times. The technology, according to TI, significantly reduces the peak output voltage deviation under transient load conditions, while saving the customer the cost and board space for additional capacitors.
The device's SmartSync technology allows for switching frequency synchronization of multiple modules, thereby simplifying electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise suppression tasks and reducing input capacitor ripple current requirements. The PTH08T240F also includes Auto-Track sequencing, which simplifies simultaneous power-up and power-down of multiple power modules in the system.
The chip also features over-current protection and programmable under-voltage lockout. In addition, the PTH08T240F offers over-temperature protection, on/off inhibit control, differential remote sense and an output regulation of 1.5 percent.

The module comes in surface-mount and through-hole packages. Suggested retail pricing is $11.80 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
