Product Name: Joint Tactical Radio System Ground Mobile Radios (JTRS GMR)
Product Description
The Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) is a family of
software-programmable tactical radios. They will provide combat personnel with
voice, data, and video communications that are interoperable among all
battlefield participants regardless of the branch of service.
Capabilities
JTRS will be used by all branches of the military, and it will possess the
following capabilities:
- A new, wideband, networked waveform that provides mobile connectivity and
access to IP-based information posted on the network across the battle space
- Sufficient bandwidth for voice, data, and video communications
- Compatibility with the 23 waveforms currently in use by the DoD and
interoperability between all service branches
Project Team
The Boeing Company is the prime contractor for the JTRS GMR program, which
will be implemented on U.S. Army ground vehicles. Other team members include the
following organizations:
- Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (ground vehicle systems integration and
network management)
- Rockwell Collins (waveform and hardware development)
- BAE Systems (waveform and hardware development)
- Harris RF Communications Division (hardware)
The U.S. Army is leading the development initiative -- which applies to the
entire Department of Defense (DoD) -- to address the lack of interoperability
and the lack of bandwidth that currently characterize battlefield radio
communication systems.
