Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL)

Product Name: Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL)

Product Description

More than just a hand-held radio, the Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) is a complete, multifunction communication system solution. The system is based on a flexible, modular communication architecture that provides multiple satellite links for dependable, secure low probability of intercept/low probability of detection (LPI/LPD) over-the-horizon (OTH) communications; line-of-sight (LOS) voice communications; global geoposition; navigation, and beacon functions.

Features/Capabilities

CSEL includes:

  • a multifunction, hand-held radio offering unique communication and message encryption, which prevents signals from being intercepted, and 21-day battery life providing crucial contact for extended periods.
  • secure digital message communications, Global Positioning System (GPS), line-of sight (LOS) voice and the full spectrum of radio and ground equipment interfaces required to work with existing search and rescue (SAR) systems.

Providing a complete system solution, the CSEL communication systems is made up of a user equipment segment, ground segment, and OTH relay segment.

The User Equipment segment consists of a multifunctional hand-held radio and theater mission planning computers, including GPS key loaders. The hand-held radio supports data communication for all OTH Relay modes:

  • aircraft interrogation
  • precise geopositioning
  • SAR aircraft-compatible line-of-site (LOS) voice and beacon

The Ground segment is designed to operate simultaneously with other government systems. It uses existing infrastructure providing a highly reliable and timely global connection between all CSEL ground elements:

  • hosted on existing government networks and workstations
  • user friendly interface
  • extensive mapping capability

The OTH Relay segment uses multiple, and in most cases, redundant DoD communication channels to assure transmission and reception of CSEL message traffic, resulting in rapid CSAR response times. It provides:

  • near real-time two-way secure messaging and geolocation
  • multiple satellite links
  • extensive use of commercial off-the-shelf/government off-the-shelf (COTS/GOTS) hardware for base station

The CSEL architecture meets near-term requirements, while assuring flexibility for future growth, and enhancements, including migration to a commercial satellite solution.
