MultiSurface Aerodynamics

Product Name: MultiSurface Aerodynamics

Product Description

MultiSurface Aerodynamics is a powerful computer aided engineering  (CAE) software tool for the marine industry. It is recommended for professionals who perform aerodynamics conceptual design and analysis of competition sailboats and other high performing vessels. Without MultiSurface Aerodynamics, developing a viable keel involves building a prototype, screening it in a wind tunnel or tow tank and then actually placing the appendage on a yacht for an ocean test. MultiSurface Aerodynamics speeds up the process of producing a finished keel, rudder or sail by simulating the the product using an ordinary PC. Ideas (even the most outlandish) for improving the airfoils, planform and size of appendages and sails can be tested in minutes with MultiSurface Aerodynamics.

Some features of the software include:

  • Airfoil analysis and re-design
  • Accurate computation of lift, drag and moments of 3D keel and rudder surfaces
  • Computation of separation points along the span
  • Maximum lift calculation for both airfoils and 3D wings
  • Cavitation screening
  • 3D output in the form of .stl files

How to Improve Keel Performance with MultiSurface
MultiSurface Aerodynamics (Compare Keel Designs)

MultiSurface Features

Use MultiSurface Aerodynamics's airfoil analysis tools to:

  • Compute lift, profile drag and moment coefficient for airfoil sections.

  • Compute bending, twisting and  yawing moments

  • Compute center of effort

  • Estimate the maximum lift for airfoil sections at different Reynolds Numbers.

  • Generate multiple graphs of Cl vs. AOA,  Cm vs AOA, Cl vs. Cd, Cl/Cd vs. AOA, etc. to facilitate comparison of airfoil sections at various sailing conditions.

  • Edit, print, copy to clipboard and export graphs to .bmp file format.

  • Generate coordinates for NACA 4, 5 & 6-Digit Airfoils.

  • Read-in custom airfoils sections for analysis

  • Modify & save airfoils using the Airfoil Data Tool.

  • Plot airfoils to any size.

  • Export airfoils to .dxf files for inclusion in CAD programs.

To size the actual keel, use the MultiSurface Aerodynamics planform design & analysis features to:

  • Compute the overall lift for rectangular & tapered keels & rudders.
  • Analyze the effects of different aspect ratios.
  • Estimate maximum lift for the keels.
  • Compute & compare the profile and induced drag for different keels & rudders.
  • Analyze keels & rudders with distinct airfoils at the root and tip chords (linear aerodynamic twist)
  • Analyze keels with positive/negative dihedral angles for canting keel designs.
  • Analyze keels with forward and backwards sweep to test stability.
  • Compute neutral point for the keels and determine longitudinal stability.
  • Generate graphs and compare CL vs. AOA, CM vs. AOA, CL/CD vs. AOA & CL vs. CD for similar keel and rudder designs.
  • Edit, print, copy to clipboard and export graphs to .bmp file format.
  • Generate tables of keel & rudder characteristics for different angles of attack, speeds, water conditions and planform size.
  • Export tables to .csv file format for use in spreadsheet programs.
  • Export 3D wings to .stl file format for virtual prototyping use in other CAD/CAE software.

MultiSurface Aerodynamics come with a built-in library of NACA 4, 5 & 6-digit airfoils, a cross sectional tool and water data. It can be used to read-in and analyze custom airfoils. The software exports tables to .csv files for easy inclusion in spreadsheet programs. It also exports a .stl file that can be imported into other CAD /CAE software packages and used by CNC machines.
