Product Name: Wireless Applications
Product Description
Commercial Building Automation
Intelligent control of commercial buildings can result in huge savings in
energy consumption, but the installation costs of wired sensors and controls
have been prohibitive. There are a host of sensor and control functions that can
benefit from being wirelessly networked, including:
- measuring temperature and humidity
- controlling heating, ventilation, air-conditioning units, shades blinds
and lighting
- detecting smoke, fire door positions, and occupancy
- controlling access and providing security etc
Now wireless systems are practical because the integration of the whole radio
(RF, micro-controller, and memory) onto a single chip brings a low power,
small-size, and very low cost. Battery powered sensors can be easily installed
and moved, saving thousands of dollars on wiring installation costs. The system
can be easily scaled with additional sensors, and the system provides for
numerous transmission paths to ensure crucial data is received.
Industrial Process Monitoring and Control
Comprehensive monitoring and control of industrial processes and equipment is
crucial to achieving efficient production, minimizing cost, and ensuring safety
of staff and public. However, providing enough wired sensors – perhaps
thousands - to monitor and control an average industrial process is a costly,
and complex business. Applications range from meter reading, through pipeline
flow measurement, to machine control. Sensors might simply be for temperature,
or for specialist gas detection.
Wiring is expensive, and even more expensive to change. Wireless systems can
offer a good solution if the sensors and controllers are low cost, easy to
install, and can provide a robust transmission method to guarantee the signal
gets through. Apart from being cheaper and more flexible, wireless sensors can
also be used in hazardous environments inaccessible to normal wired systems.
Home Automation
Networking many residential facilities wirelessly has been dream for many
years. Controlling temperature and lighting in each room, occupancy and smoke
detectors as security features, and even monitoring the status of domestic
appliances such as washing machines, provides real benefits to many homeowners.
New houses also need to be constructed to ever-higher levels of energy
efficiency, but the complexity and cost of traditional wired heating, lighting
and ventilation systems has excluded them from all but the most expensive homes.
In new residential buildings such systems can now be implemented easily and
with very little cost by low power, wireless sensors. Upgrading a system based
on the new industry standards (802.15.4 and ZigBee) is easily done simply by
adding extra sensors. A single system supports fire detection, security and
access, and lighting and environment control.
