Product Name: Radon in Water
Product Description
Significance
Subsoil radon is in intimate contact with the well water and carries some dissolved radon. When water is used in homes for shower, in laundry or other purposes, radon gets released from water and spreads into room air. EPA estimates that 10,000 pCi/L of radon in water causes about 1 pC/L of radon in air in homes.
Regulatory limits
USEPA is in the process of regulating the radon in water for municipal water supplies and a regulatory limit is not yet finalized, but likely to be in the range of 300 to 3000 pCi/L. The limits may be closer to 3000 pCi/L with some restrictions.
E-PERM Radon in water kit
Radon in water can be inexpensively and accurately measured with E-PERM radon monitor by releasing radon from a measured volume of water into a closed volume relatively radon free air. the E-PERM is suspended over the water sample from the lid of the measurement jar. The resulting radon concentration in air is a measure of the concentration of radon in water.
A complete kit with detailed protocol is available for those who wish to use this method for measuring radon in water. Radon concentrations measurable from 200 pCi/L to 100,000 pCi/L by choosing different E-PERM configurations for radon in air.
Several papers have been published demonstrating that this method gives results comparable to the liquid scintillation method, considered as base line method. These documents have been submitted to USEPA during the month of March 1998 with arequest to approve this method for compliance measurement. Liquid scintillation method requires very expensive equipment and only very large laboratories can afford such equipment. Further the liquid scintilator material is toxic and may require special handling and disposal.
For those who have E-PERM radon monitoring system, the add on equipment cost of measuring radon in water is less than $ 500 for measuring 10 samples at a time. The running cost per measurement could be about one dollar per measurement.
