Product Description
Just as in the film "Back to the Future" we may one day be driving cars powered by their own mini-power plants. We may not only be driving automobiles powered by them, but also using them to power appliances when we go camping or tools at home. These automotive fuel cells are the subject of intensive research and development efforts today. And, catalysts are a key enabling technology.
Fuel cells use electrochemistry rather than combustion to generate electricity from hydrogen. Most commonly, they run on fuels like natural gas, methanol or gasoline and use a fuel reformer to convert these hydrocarbon fuels into hydrogen and other components. A fuel cell stack then processes the hydrogen with oxygen from the air to generate electricity and pure water, carbon dioxide and heat.
A variety of catalysts and sorbents are needed in both the reformer and the stack in order to make the fuel cell work. These products must be reliable, durable and safe in a tough environment where they will be subject to rapidly shifting processing needs and, potentially, poisons in the gasoline or other fuel.
But perhaps most daunting is the need for cost and size reduction. Today's automotive fuel-cell systems are too large for the average car. They will have to get a whole lot smaller and more economical before they will find their way into our cars.
That's why Engelhard has undertaken an intensive R&D program today, in order to meet our customers' needs tomorrow. Today, we already offer Selectra™ catalysts and sorbents to help fuel cell developers create fully commercial products for both stationary and automotive applications. We're also working closely with some of the world's leading carmakers to make fuel cell automobiles a reality.
