Since the 1960s, impressive progress has been made in efforts to control tailpipe emissions from automobiles around the world. Thanks to pollution control developments, particularly the three-way catalytic converter, today's automobiles are 95 to 98% cleaner running than the automobiles sold in the 1960s. In fact, Engelhard pioneered the development of the modern, three-way catalytic converter.
Yet there is more to be done. In the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), over 60 million Americans live in areas with unhealthy air. Under the Clean Air Act, EPA continues to tighten air quality standards.
Recently, EPA announced its Tier 2 program establishing more stringent emission standards beginning in 2004 for all passenger vehicles, including sport-utility vehicles, minivans, vans and pick-up trucks. By 2009, all passenger vehicles, not just "cars," are to be 99 % less polluting than vehicles sold in the 1960s.
Similar restrictions are being adopted in Europe and Japan. Other parts of the world also are implementing automotive emissions control programs that require the use of automotive catalysts.
