Thatch Reed Panels

Product Name: Thatch Reed Panels

Product Description

Thatch Reed Panels
Thatch reed panels are made from two types of natural thatch reed and thatch grass bonded together with a flexible urethane top strip to form a tough almost waterproof thatch panel or thatch shingle.

These thatch reed shingles can be used outdoors on top of existing roofs to create a natural thatch roof appearance, or can be used on wood or steel frames such as umbrellas to create a tropical thatch umbrella which is 99% waterproof and will resist high wind loads.

Features of Thatch Reed Panels:

5-10% (F) cooler than regular shade materials
99% waterproof
Maintenance and mildew free
4-5 years longevity
1 year warranty
Fire Retardant panels available
6 panels per box

Thatch Reed Panel Specifications :

Binder consists of a flexible 2 component polyurethane mixture reinforced with shade cloth glued together at one end.
Thatch Reed Panels consist of 3 layers:
Top Layer:

The top ¼ portion of the tile is made from Cape Reed. (Thamnochortus Insignis)
Middle Layer:

Selected Thatch Grass (Hyperphenia species) make up the bulk part of this unique tile. The texture of the Thatch Grass ensures that the tile is almost 100% waterproof due to the smaller compact strands.

The tile will also last longer than a regular Thatch Reed Tile because the grass will not retain as much moisture as does the reed. (Please see article written by Jan Grobbler about Thatch Reed Panels).
Bottom Layer:

Cape Reed (Thamnochortus Insignis) is used on the underside of the tile. The visual beauty of he tile is not lost as the Cape Reed is still visible from the under side of the tile.

Installation Instructions for Thatch Reed Panels:

Very quick and easy to install - no special tools or skills needed.

Thatch tiles can either be clipped over a 8mm (1/4") steel rod or nailed with 50mm (2") nails or stapled to wooden battens.

The minimum suggested pitch should be 30 degrees, but a steeper pitch will increase water run-off and longevity

The thatch tiles are installed in layered courses (See Sketch 2).

FAQ’s About Thatch Reed Panels:
How do I install the Thatch Reed panels on my existing home’s roof?:

If you are installing African Reed Panels on an existing roof, you will need to install those panels every 12" Additionally, you will need a grid structure built on the roof to allow for water run-off. This grid structure is nothing more that a series of furring strips first applied vertically on the roof then horizontally. Then the thatch reed panels are applied via staples directly to the strips. This allows for water to naturally run off the roof and not be trapped under the panels.
If I have a Tiki hut in the back yard and want Thatch Reed panels applied to the roof, what do I need to do?:

If you have an existing Tiki hut or Spa cover with a grass or palm roof and want to change to an African thatch roof, you simply remove the existing roof and apply the Reed panels every 12 inches. These need to be stapled on at a minimum pitch of 30 degrees for structures with no sub-roof. The steeper the pitch the more water-proof the structure will be.
How do I attach Thatch Reed panels to my structure?:

We recommend using galvanized 1 1/2" staples, with a 1/2" or 1/4" crown depending on the staple gun. This will require a heavy-duty staple gun which can be rented at your local home improvement store.
