Tracability: Following product quality increasingly demands inspection by sampling. Effectively, sampling is the sole method which permits sufficient control of parameters such as: - Weight before and after processing. - Deformations (straightness of yarn, displacement of weave etc). - The texture. - Colouring – comparison of different samples taken throughout production. - Exposure to natural or artificial light to follow aging of colours. - Reaction to different chemical processes (washing with detergent etc). - Water pressure tests on waterproof fabrics. - Archiving. - Etc. The list above of inspections tests that are possible on a sample is, of course, not limited. Taking Samples Remains the most evolved form of batch tracability with in addition a panoply of tests which cannot be realised on continuous production. So that a sample may be totally representative, it needs: - To be of a diameter which conforms to European norms (100 cm2). - To be taken in the right spot. - To be taken without a change in speed of the machine which insures the process. - To be in perfect condition (not wrinkled, no displacement of the weave, no marks). - To be cut straight. - Not to break into strands on very smooth synthetic fabrics. (where cut auto-retracts). As for the SAMPLE it should be taken without generating waste other than that which is allied to the transversal belt concerned by sampling (a theoretical belt of 112, 838 mm). The Equipment The sampling head (Patented) puts into application two combined functions: - Thermal to fragilize the fibers. - Mechanical for cutting. So that these operations may be made without altering the sample, the fabric is held on both sides of the cutting line. The global time for taking a sample is in the order of "a second". The rapidity of this operation allows the quantity of fabric that accumulates to be kept to a minimum. The balancing accumulator reacts in compensation and does not modify the tension in the machine or on the sampling point. The object of this technique is important to insure the quality of the sample taken. The sample is gathered in a vacuum receptacle which the operator can move towards him at the edge of the machine wherever the point of sampling is to be found (centre, left or right edge of fabric). Various options permit automation of sampling in function of: - The length (measurement counter). - The taking of two successive samples (by treatment, by missing) for differential weighing. - Activated by a seam detector. - Activated by a sonic reader. - Automatic evacuation of the sample. - Marking of the sample and automatic archiving. - One sole sampling head which is indexed successively on the: centre, left side and right edge. - Three sampling heads simultaneously on the same belt (minimum waste). SECURITY ASPECTS This continuous sampling equipment responds exactly to the security norms dictated by the EEC, which forbids operating personnel to interfere with machines whilst they are functioning. Effectively, the operator starts the sampling operation and recuperates the sample outside the "activity" zone thus avoiding contact with the machine whilst it is functioning. With maintenance at practically zero, this equipment is always available and accessible, to the operator of course and equally to the quality controller, the chemist responsable for the treatment baths, the production manager etc. For the development of new products, the laboratory can reduce its "waiting time" with production machines by taking the necessary samples throughout the production process in order to make post-operational analysis.
