Surface science is often invisible, yet it impacts on almost every facet of industry and on every aspect of our daily life. Surface science is that branch of physical organic chemistry which defines the behavior of molecules at or near a surface or interface. The interface can be between liquids, solids or gases or any combination thereof. Molecules which modify the behavior at an interface are called surface active agents or surfactants. The technologies which drive the manufacture of surfactants are chemical engineering and synthetic organic chemistry.
Surface active agents are responsible for the fundamental physical effects of wetting, dispersion or deflocculation and emulsification. Wetting enhances the spreading and penetrating ability of a liquid, which in turn creates effects as diverse as improving the cleaning ability of water or facilitating the adhesion of a paint film. Dispersion forces prevent soil redepositing on fabrics during the washing process, or keep minute particles of pesticide in suspension during spraying.
The process of emulsification facilitates applications as diverse as the preparation of cosmetic creams and lotions, the making of ice cream, or the manufacture and application of lubricants for cold rolling of sheet steel. Detergency, the fundamental mechanism of the cleaning process, is a complex amalgam of wetting, dispersion and emulsification.
