DRS's MX-512PA Link-11/TADIL-A Data Terminal Set provides all required modem and network control functions in a Link-11/TADIL-A system using either HF or UHF radios. It meets the Data Terminal Set requirements of MIL-STD-188-203-1A and may be operated as a picket or net control station in a TADIL-A net. As a net control station, the MX-512PA accepts addresses from the tactical data computer or from a separate control panel. The MX-512PA provides all the modes of Link-11/TADIL-A systems including net control or picket, high and low data rate, net test, net sync, short broadcast, long broadcast and full-duplex (for single station system tests and sidetone verification). Doppler correction circuits that operate independently on both sidebands are operator selectable. 

The MX-512PA also operates in the improved Link-11 Waveform (SLEW) mode. The data terminal set may be controlled externally by a computer over a MIL-STD-188-114 or RS-232C compatible asynchronous control interface. The MX-512PA may also be controlled from a separate remote control panel using menus standard to the MX-512PA DTS family. It also provides, as an option, a MIL-STD-1553B data bus interface which can provide control data and accept status and link quality data. The MX-512PA is a programmable DTS. All modem, network control and link monitoring functions are performed digitally in microprocessors using a modular multi-processor architecture. Selection of the conventional Link-11 or Improved Link-11 Waveform is made over the remote control interface. The single-tone waveform for Link-11 provides improved performance in HF Link-11 networks on a single sideband HF channel. Single-tone Link-11 uses an 8-phase modulated 1800-Hz tone. Adaptive equalization is used to demodulate the signal under the severe multipath conditions typical of HF propagation paths. Robust error detection and correction codes are used to provide enhanced message throughput. 

The MX-512PA provides, as an option, a 2400 bps, full-duplex, RS-232C satellite/wireline interface which transmits and receives compatible Link-11 data in digital form. Link-11 data may be sent over satellite, wireline, or other tactical circuits. The MX-512PA can be operated in either the "digital" mode, the "conventional" mode, or in a "mixed" mode (a gateway), where some pickets operate in the digital transmission mode and some in the conventional HF or UHF mode. The DRS MX-512PA provides, as an option, link quality analysis indicators which include multipath spread, fading bandwidth, net cycle time since last reply, and tone power spectrum for each participating unit in the network. Using these indicators, an operator can troubleshoot equipment failures and configuration setup problems in the net and determine when HF propagation problems require a change of radio frequency. Built-In Test provisions in the MX-512PA include loopback functions which verify operation of the system.
