MDA-31 Digital Voice Terminal with Data Adapter (DVT/DA)

Product Name: MDA-31 Digital Voice Terminal with Data Adapter (DVT/DA)

Product Description

The DRS DVT/DA is a communications terminal for an individual soldier with access to MSE or TRI-TAC networks. The Digital Voice Terminal with Data Adapter (DVT/DA) is an MDA (MSE Data Adapter) and DNVT (Digital Non-Secure Voice Terminal) built into a single, lightweight, ruggedized unit suitable for field operation. For voice communications, the DRS DVT/DA operates like any DNVT. For data communications, the DVT/DA contains a multifunction RS-232 data port capable of interoperating with most standard data devices such as PCs, fax machines, message terminals, etc.

The DVT/DA is a four wire telephone set which transmits and receives conditioned diphase-modulated digital voice, data, and loop signaling information at 16 or 32 kbps over its digital loop interface. It operates with all MSE or TRI-TAC compatible switches and multiplexers, and typically derives its power from this equipment. The DVT/DA can operate up to 4 km away from a switch/mux with up to 4 km distance between terminals. Protection from high- energy electromagnetic pulses, such as from lightning, is built in.

The DRS DVT/DA includes a standard H-350 handset for voice communication. Continuously Variable Slope Delta (CVSD) modulation is used to digitize voice at 16 or 32 kbps. This makes the DVT/DA compatible with all other MSE/TRI-TAC telephone terminals such as the KY-68 DSVT, the TA-954 DNVT, the TA-1035 DNVT, the TA-1042 DNVT, the TTA, and the MMT 1500/DNVT Tactical STU III.

With its internal MDA, the DVT/DA gives any RS-232 DTE equipment access into MSE or TRI-TAC networks. Data, such as message traffic, file transfers and imagery, are easily exchanged over the MSE or TRI-TAC communications backbone. The user configures the DVT/DA data port for a specific data device by selecting the appropriate data mode, rate and protocol processing via data mode switches. Forward Error Correction (FEC) modes combat the effects of noisy transmission channels.

Data calls can be established either manually using the DVT/DA hookswitch and keypad or automatically from the data device using industry standard AT commands. Once established, a call can be switched between voice and data mode as many times as desired. DVT/DA data communication is compatible with the KY-68 DSVT, the TA-1035 DNVT, the TA-1024 DNVT, and the TTA, although to take full advantage of the DVT/DA's data and error correction capabilities, it is best to communicate with a second DVT/DA or another of the MDA products from DRS. The DVT/DA's lightweight, watertight structural foam case allows it to withstand the rigors of a tactical environment. High reliability and low power consumption are achieved through the use of sophisticated CMOS circuitry including a custom ASIC for all loop signaling functions and a microcontroller for data communication and protocol processing.
