Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM STM-16/64 Optical Multi-Service Node for Metro Applications

Product Name: Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM STM-16/64 Optical Multi-Service Node for Metro Applications

Product Description

Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM STM-16/64 Optical Multi-Service Node for Metro Applications
The Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) comprises next-generation STM-16/64 SDH equipment that integrates packet-switching functionality into a capable SDH system. It can be configured as a pure add-drop multiplexer or as a small cross connect. It provides STM-1/4/16/64 ports and a 384x384/256x256 STM-1 equivalent HO/LO matrix. Existing 1660 SM equipment with STM-16 interfaces can be seamlessly upgraded to STM-64.

Meeting both metropolitan and regional network requirements, the 1660 SM is an ideal multiservice transport building block for delivering SDH, integrated ATM and Packet Ring MPLS-based switching capabilities, as well as LAN interfaces (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet). Integrated Service Adapter (ISA) modules designed for ATM or Packet Ring switching and Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet transport through the optical network can be equipped as needed.

The main network applications of the Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM are: SDH metro transport in both ring and meshed network architectures; Backhauling of 3G mobile and DSL broadband traffic; Metro Ethernet in MAN and WAN; SANs.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1660 SM offers an AU3/TU3 conversion feature to support SONET/SDH gateway capabilities (for cost-effective transportion and aggregation of non-concatenated SONET payloads) when OMSNs are deployed at the SONET/SDH boundaries.

It provides unmatched performance for its footprint.

Also, thanks to the full interoperability with the Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan product family, the 1660 SM allows for flexible and cost-effective Storage Area Network (SAN) and transparent data services, spanning SDH and WDM technologies.

Benefits

  • Optimizes cost-effectiveness of transport networks: efficient for traditional revenue generating voice and leased-line traffic, ready to serve the increasing Ethernet, ATM and IP services demand

  • Reduced time to market for new revenue-generating broadband data services: "ISA" and "4xAny" plug-in-concept for easy service upgrade where and when needed

  • Smooth and cost-effective in-field network upgrades: from 2.5G to 10G, leveraging huge operators' 1660 SM existing assets at minimal CAPEX and OPEX

  • Guaranteed customer service reliability: protection methods

  • Unrestricted deployment of hardware items across systems, synergy in spares and spare management, easy repairs and reduced training requirements: through the common building block concept of the Optical Multi-Service Nodes and Gateways (OMSN and OMSG) product family

Documents

The Alcatel DVB-ASI enables broadcasting companies to transport digital video broadcasting (DVB)-compliant signals over the same unique reliable optical infrastructure. In the recent past, video transmission across wide metropolitan areas required a costly overlay network separate from voice and data networks due to a lack of digital video interface standards, designed for WAN transport. The deployment of the Asynchronous Serial Interface (ASI) together with the packet-adaptation capability offered by the Generic Frame Protocol (GFP), have recently allowed packet-based transmission of compressed video signals over next-generation SDH equipment. Such capability streamlines bandwidth optimization compared to the traditional ASI/ATM/E3/FE broadcast transmission.

The Alcatel DVB-ASI card (coexisting with the ISA-ESx series) plugs into optical multiservice nodes and acts as a network adapter (NA), allowing optimized encapsulation of digital video signal within SDH frames. This way, broadcasters can deliver digital broadband video, broadband data, video on demand (VoD), telephony, and other business services over the same converged networks.

One single multiservice infrastructure allows digitally compressed video signals to be deployed both for primary distribution (point-to-multipoint) and for contribution (point-to-point). In both cases, the node and network architecture must assure reliability and flexibility — reliability to protect NAs from failure adopting EPS schemes, and flexibility to enable the operator to efficiently configure SDH paths. Figure 1 depicts the reference model for a compressed video environment according to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Video transport applications are typically unidirectional.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

The Alcatel DVB-ASI NA has a port card and an access card, along with a special access card that is used to implement 1+1 EPS. Physical card dimensions are the same as those of the Alcatel OMSN family; each card occupies one slot. Figure 2 depicts the slot definition of the Alcatel 1660 SM. DVB-ASI NA port cards can be housed in slots 24 to 31 and from 32 to 39 in the basic area. For each port card, the corresponding DVB-NA access card must be housed in access area slots with a fixed relation to those in the basic area (respectively from 2 to 9 and from 13 to 20). The access card contains four BNCs (J1 to J4), which correspond to input (TX) channels from 1 to 4,while the four BNCs (J5 to J8) correspond to output (RX) channels from 5 to 8. Up to 16 ISA ASIs can be plugged into the Alcatel Optical Multi-Service Node (i.e., 1660 SM). RX and TX can be independently set up.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

> Electrical interfaces

> DVB-ASI interfaces According to CENELEC EN 50083-9

> Line driver and equalization to guarantee up to 150m of Belden 1694A coaxial cable

ALARM MAPPING

The following alarm radixes are provided:

> DVB-ASI LOS (loss of signal), LOA (loss of code word alignment: no /K28.5/), LOF (loss of transport packet (TP) frame: no valid TP) are mapped to generic client LOS. In the case of client signal fail (CSF), the egress DVB-ASI stream is an invalid 10B code word sequence > Exceeding input bit rate is the only specific alarm

PERFORMANCE MONITORING

No specific performance monitoring: only SDH-related performance monitoring is provided.

DVB-ASI MANAGEMENT IN CT AND NMS

Board management is completely integrated into the Alcatel 1660 SM equipment. Both local management through a craft terminal (CT) and remote management through communication to the 1350 Network Management (NM) are possible.
