Documents

The Alcatel 1650 SMC Optical Multiservice Node (OMSN) is an ideal spacesaving, next-generation SDH building block for local and access networks, providing unmatched performance and multitechnology integration for its size. A compact, cost-effective multiservice transport platform, the Alcatel 1650 SMC addresses metro-access applications, offering a transport platform with integrated packet functions to support revenues from multiple broadband services such as:

> Private-line and Ethernet business services

> Mobile aggregation

> Transport services

> Always-on mission-critical communication

COMPACT MULTISERVICE PROVISIONING PLATFORM FOR METRO ACCESS

Metro access networks today require very cost-effective solutions that are highly reliable and capable of flexibly adapting to evolving traffic patterns for new broadband services. The highly-resilient capacity of SDH technology, together with the integration of packet-switching functionality — ATM, Ethernet, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) — make the Alcatel 1650 SMC a compact, cost-effective multiservice transport node. The Alcatel 1650 SMC is ideally targeted for optical metro-network applications where size, infrastructure costs, reliability and data-centric services play the winning key role. The Alcatel 1650 SMC features all standard PDH and SDH interfaces from 2 Mb/s to 622 Mb/s and offers integrated service adapter (ISA) blades specifically designed to support the processing of packet-based traffic with quality of service (QoS) levels to support SLAs for new broadband services. The Alcatel 1650 SMC also hosts the Alcatel Digital Video Broadcasting- Asynchronous Serial Interface (DVB-ASI) blade, enabling broadcasting companies to transport DVB-compliant signals over the same unique, reliable optical infrastructure. With the SHDSL extension product, the Alcatel 1650 SMC extends multiservice transport SDH capabilities throughout the copper-based access network.

The Alcatel 1650 SMC is the ideal multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP) at STM-4 for building next-generation SDH metro-access transport networks. The Alcatel 1650 SMC’s single shelf integrates highly reliable SDH transport functions with carrier-class Layer 2 packet/cell switching functions, such as Ethernet, MPLS and ATM, to support new broadband services — Ethernet virtual private networks (VPNs), high-speed Internet access and 3G mobile aggregation. The convergence of many client signals over the same optical infrastructure also assures the best always-on communication for information technology (IT) and telecom systems belonging to many different industry sectors, such as energy and transportation.

COMPACT, FLEXIBLE, RELIABLE, DATA-ORIENTED

The Alcatel 1650 SMC is based on 2 x STM-4 line interfaces, 32 x 32 fully non-blocking high-order/low-order SDH matrix, clock reference and equipment-control functions, all concentrated in a 1-slot wide compact add/drop multiplexer (ADM) card, optionally 1+1 protected. Three slots are dedicated to traffic ports, with total flexibility. For example, the system can be configured as an:

> STM-1 ADM with full termination capacity (63 x 2 Mb/s)

> STM-4 hub with 75 x Ethernet 10/100Base-T interfaces for direct LAN interconnection

> STM-4 mini cross-connect with up to 12 x STM-1 tributaries, used to link several optical access nodes, such as Alcatel 1642 Edge Multiplexer (EM/EMC) CPE to large metro networks

Multiple subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) rings (up to 8 x STM-1 rings) can be terminated by the same node. The VC cross-connect capacity provides full connectivity at all VC layers for any possible configuration. STM-4 and STM-1 electrical/optical interfaces are mounted on plug-in modules that enable a flexible combination of electrical and optical ports (any short- or long-haul type) on the same unit. The Alcatel 1650 SMC has a symmetrical architecture, enabling its application as a terminal multiplexer, ADM or mini cross-connect in spur, multiple-ring or mesh topologies. All traffic ports (PDH, LAN, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet [GigE] or SDH) of the same type have the same functionality and behavior and there is no inherent split between tributaries and aggregates. This means that it is possible to cross-connect all traffic ports at all VCi levels. Two types of network protection mechanisms are implemented in the Alcatel 1650 SMC: linear multiplex section protection (MSP), and SNCP, with the drop-andcontinue function for improved traffic availability. Although the system is very compact in size, node protection is possible in addition to line protection, as replaceable units are optionally redundant. Power-supply protection is inherent because the DC/DC conversion function is distributed on each card. The Alcatel OMSN family consolidates the extensive experience gathered by Alcatel in the field of SDH transmission through tens of thousands of installations worldwide.

OPTIMIZING OPERATION

The Alcatel 1650 SMC shares most of its replaceable units (common parts and traffic cards) with the rest of the Alcatel OMSN family. This flexibility allows carriers to minimize the impact of spare holding and personnel training for immediate benefits in terms of investment reduction and lower network OPEX. Also, the absence of processors on most traffic boards enables reuse of available in-stock cards, making in-service upgrades quick and easy jobs. All management information — configuration, performance monitoring, alarms, security — is available through a local craft terminal and through the Q-interface to the Alcatel 1350 Management Suite (MS), offering management functions with the same look and feel for all members of the Alcatel OMSN family.
