Product Name: Alcatel-Lucent Optical Management Solutions
Alcatel-Lucent Optical Management (formerly Navis® Optical Management) is a portfolio of software products that provides comprehensive and integrated management solutions for optical transport networks and a broad set of features and functions for managing SDH, SONET, DWDM and Service Intelligent™ Optical Networks. Benefits: Integrated set of management solutions for optical transport networks Delivers features and functions for managing a wide range of optical transport networks Supports both Lucent and multi-vendor networks Features: Enables configuration, activation and support of new network elements Helps manage network capacity and maintain resource inventory Enables rapid service activation Supports end-to-end provisioning Provides network and service assurance and restoration Benefits Alcatel-Lucent Optical Management provides innovative network management capabilities that can help you differentiate your services. (QoS) Helps create value-added service differentiation Delivers a seamless transition to next-generation networks Features Alcatel-Lucent Optical Management helps meet your needs by providing a flexible network management package that supports customization Documents System (SMS) is
the Alcatel network management solution for
submarine customers. The SMS allows corrective
preventive actions to be carried out during system
life improving then the Quality of Service (QoS).
The SMS has the ability to evolve with traffic and
technology and is adapted to customer’s
organization. Network Management Objectives Efficient and cost-effective operation in
transport Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)
technology based networks entails a need for
centralized and efficient network operation.
Network Management facilitates the operation
and maintenance of ever growing networks in terms
of size and complexity by offering facilities
which: - Enhance usage of network resources; - Enhance network reliability and
availability; - Facilitate and speed-up network maintenance; - Monitor the Quality of Service (QoS). The Submarine Management System The SMS is the result of a seamless
integration between the 1353SH and the 1354SN
applications. The 1353SH is responsible for Network
Element (NE) installation, configuration and
maintenance in the physical submarine transmission
network. The 1354SN is responsible for end-to-end
configuration and monitoring of submarine WDM
optical paths. The SMS manages the submarine
networks composed of the following NEs: - Tera10, OALW40, OALW16 Submarine Line
Terminal Equipment (SLTE); - Power Feeding Equipment (PFE); - Submerged elements: repeaters, Tilt
Equalizer unit (TEQ), WDM Branching Unit
(BU). The SMS can be seamlessly integrated with
Alcatel terrestrial network management systems
(co-hosting of functional and presentation parts).
The SMS can also be integrated in a multi-vendor
architecture. Graphical User Interface (GUI) The SMS provides a user-friendly GUI based
on animated graphical views of the system and
of the managed elements. The views are dynamic. The
color of an associated icon on a map or the
presence of a symbol within an icon reflects the
status of each item. Navigation facility between
SMS windows is offered by means of edit or popup
menus. Performance information can be
retrieved using filtering criteria and displayed in
tabular or graphical format. Both Zero Installation
Client (ZIC) concept and Java based GUI over the
Internet are supported. NE Representation Once a NE is declared and configured,
the operator can display its representation in
the SMS. A physical representation is available,
tallying with the real NE. Zooming into detailed
equipment views is possible. Functional views are
also available such as Transmission view for
an SLTE, which indicates tributaries carrying
traffic and protection tributaries. Network Topology Once the SMS is tailored and dimensioned
to customer requirements (configuration phase),
a geographical view of the network is available
containing icons related to landing stations, BUs
and sub-segments. From this view, several other
views can be accessed: - Network Powering view; - WDM view; - Optical Path view; - Line Equipment view; - Transmission view. All generic fault management facilities
such as the alarm acquisition, alarm counter
management, current problem list management, alarm
log management are available to supervise submarine
WDM networks. Line Supervision Line supervision activity can be carried
out, for a list of Line Elements (LE), on demand
or periodically. In the latter case, a process called
Routine Maintenance (RM) is configured to request
measurements of a list of LE with a defined
periodicity. A detailed report is provided at the
end of the RM. In both cases, LE measurements
are displayed in real time and stored in a database
to be consulted later (history). Repeater power
settings can be adjusted after a cable repair or
during system operation and maintenance. Fault Location After detection of a transmission fault or
on operator request, a fault location process
is launched. Measurements collected during a fault
location are stored in a database. A detailed
diagnosis is provided at the end of the process and
the report is stored. It includes the location
and kind of defect found: - Localization of any transmission fault
within a repeater section. - Discrimination of cable faults, fiber
faults, optical amplifier faults and transmission
faults. Performance Monitoring Forward Error Correction (FEC) and SDH
B1 counters can be periodically (every 15
minutes and 24 hours) collected by the SMS at the
WDM channel level. A 1-day and 30-day Quality
factor (Q factor), based on 24 hours FEC counter
processing are provided to the operator for each
selected WDM channel. Analog measurements,
available on NE such as SLTE and PFE, can also be
collected on operator request or periodically
(every 15 minutes and 24 hours). Such information
(FEC, Q factor and analog measurements) is
stored in a database and can be consulted at any
time by the user. Semi-Automatic Pre-emphasis Adjustment
(APA) The SMS provides facilities to assist
the operator with this specific procedure dedicated
to equalize the quality of the WDM channels. Power Control System (PCS) The powering of a submarine WDM network
is an operation which has to be carefully carried
out. So the SMS is able to assist the operator in
ramping up or shutting down the power feeding of
the cable system and configuring the BUs. High Availability To provide the service continuity of the
network management system, the SMS supports
local and geographical High Availability facility
based on software mechanism or fault tolerant
platforms. Security The availability of access control
features in the SMS enables the setting up of a
security policy customized according to the
cable operator organization, so that each operator
only uses the functions and resources that are
allowed and useful for its profile. External Interfaces In order to interface to external
Operating Systems (OS), supplied by Alcatel or
other vendors, external interfaces were developed.
These interfaces are implemented with Q3
standard and, with the aim of increasing the
openness of the interface, also through CORBA
access (standard specified by the Object Management
Group) via TCP/IP. These interfaces are compliant
with TMF and ITU standards. System Characteristics - Hardware components: the SMS is available
on Hewlett-Packard’s workstation or servers, and
on PC (GUI only); - Software components: the SMS is built on
a generic software platform. The software platform
consists of both Alcatel software modules and first
rank international companies. References The SMS is supplied on several tens
of projects such as Sea-Me-We3, Gemini, Japan-US,
Southern Cross and Flag projects. Formed from the merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent combines two entities that share a common lineage that can be traced back to 1986, when Alcatel’s parent company, CGE (la Compagnie Générale d’Electricité), acquired ITT’s... more
