Alcatel-Lucent 1353 Network Manager

Product Name: Alcatel-Lucent 1353 Network Manager

Product Description

Alcatel-Lucent 1353 Network Manager
Incumbent carriers, mobile and fixed service providers and verticals wish to capture revenues by providing broadband services. Network equipment manufactures have developed a wide range of innovative technological approaches to deliver these services, so the challenge for service providers becomes managing a mixed set of services over a non-homogeneous installed base. A unified method of management is required.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1353 Network Manager (NM) provides this unified management by offering industry-leading auto discovery of network elements (NEs) and network links; provisioning; monitoring; proactive maintenance and capacity and inventory planning. In addition, it offers a range of easy-to-interpret tools, allowing non-experts to visualize network capacities and future needs.

Documents

The ever increasing range of communication services — from leased lines and traditional voice traffic to Internet and data traffic, mobile communications and video distribution — needs the support of powerful and flexible transport technologies. Optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), concatenation techniques, and Ethernet integration with SONET technology are all examples of the efforts to improve the efficiency of the network while delivering an increasingly sophisticated mix of services. Such a demanding and evolving scenario requires the ability to manage “the power of the network” flexibly and cost-effectively. To meet this challenge, Alcatel provides the Alcatel 1353 NM: the single element manager for Alcatel multitechnology, multiservice networks that integrate traditional transport technologies (SONET, WDM) with emerging data traffic like metro Ethernet. Network operations benefit from the Alcatel 1353 NM features in corrective and preventive maintenance, equipment provisioning and network administration, as well as in all operations oriented to NE management. In addition, the Alcatel 1353 NM is designed to support the Alcatel 1354 Ring Network Manager at the network management layer (NML), and integration with external operating systems (OSs) through open interfaces (1359 OS-to-OS Interface [IOO]) for visibility of network data alarms to umbrella systems.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

From the Alcatel 1353 NM, network operators can supervise the various kinds of NEs in an optical transport network, ranging from firstgeneration SONET add/drop multiplexers to next-generation SONET multiservice nodes, which combine SONET/WDM technology with data transport services. The Alcatel 1353 NM provides all the managed equipment with a common set of tools and components through which operators perform their tasks:

> Corrective maintenance

> Equipment provisioning

> Transmission and synchronization provisioning

> Performance monitoring

> Network supervision and administration

> System administration

CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE

By far the most important task a NOC faces is to react quickly to equipment alarms. The element management layer (EML) application must support OA&M personnel in reaching the highest benchmarks in the time needed to understand the location, severity, and duration of any failure occurring in the network. Like other Alcatel NM applications, the Alcatel 1353 NM uses the Alarm Surveillance (AS) component to support this challenging task. The Alcatel 1353 NM integrates AS to exploit all the advanced fault management features linked to real-time alarm handling:

> Customization of different alarm sublists, in which current alarms can be grouped according to user settings

> Alarm summary with counters per sub-list

> Comprehensive filtering criteria that let operators focus on a subset of alarms of interest

> Export and print facilities

> Alarm severity setting, which enables the operator to switch off secondary alarms and all alarms from NEs under special maintenance activities, or to switch on all alarms from a particular functional block to perform in-depth diagnostic tasks

> Automatic acknowledgment and purging actions on user-defined criteria for alarms of minor importance

EQUIPMENT PROVISIONING

The Alcatel 1353 NM provides a full set of functions that allow operators to set up, initialize, view and modify the equipment configuration and its operating parameters. Equipment configuration tasks are performed with the same application available to field personnel with the NE craft terminal, ensuring that NOC staff can easily align with local operations. These provisioning tasks include:

> NE creation and configuration

> Board setup

> Selective alarm inhibition on equipment under maintenance

> Equipment protection scheme configuration

Additionally, the Alcatel 1353 NM provides a Command Line Element Management (CLEM) tool, which allows operators who don’t need the GUI functionality to manage NEs directly with TL1. The CLEM tool provides scripting capabilities for commonly used routines, as well as the ability  to save the TL1 responses. As the CLEM tool provides all the TL1 commands supported on that particular NE, the user just needs to know the access identifier to run the command on. CLEM has been developed in an open architecture to allow for the easy integration of third-party TL1 NEs in a short development cycle. Transmission domains are normally more effectively managed by the Alcatel 1354 Ring Network Manager, since it provides viewing, configuration, fault and performance management of network-wide services, while avoiding operations with NE granularity. Operators are responsible for NE management to ensure global consistency. However, depending on the network context, operators may exploit the Alcatel 1353 NM capabilities to provision cross-connections, set up ring protection schemes, perform protection commands or define the payload structure, again using the same application available with the NE craft terminal. The Alcatel 1353 NM supports all the management operations offered by the NE itself, with no restrictions.

CAPACITY PLANNING AND INVENTORY MANAGEMENT

The Alcatel 1353 NM also addresses planning and engineering concerns, such as the amount of traffic or matrix available on deployed NEs. The Alcatel 1353 NM offers capacity and inventory planning tools that analyze the capacity and inventory of supervised NEs, providing data such as matrix utilization, I/O shelf/ card/port utilization and capacity statistics. The inventory tool retrieves the inventory information for the NEs, allowing the user to filter by part number code or equipment identifier.

OVERALL OSS/NM MANAGEMENT SOLUTION: INTERACTION WITH OTHER APPLICATIONS

The Alcatel 1353 NM application supports interaction with other applications for:

> Interworking with NML applications, such as the Alcatel 1354, which permit NML applications to integrate Alcatel 1353 EMLs and perform relevant NML fault and configuration management of the connections, circuits, and services carrying traffic across the whole network

> Alarm handover to other OS applications The Alcatel 1353 NM applications can be flexibly inserted into an OSS/NM solution used to suit a specific operator context in terms of specific business, network and organizational needs.

ALCATEL 1353 NM PLATFORM HIGHLIGHTS

The Alcatel 1353 NM supports a very scalable platform environment, in which the supporting HP hardware can be selected according to the operator’s context (depending on dimensioning requirements for the network, number of users and other factors). PC clients running most X-windows client software can connect to the Alcatel 1353 NM, which provides support for multiple client OSs (Windows, Solaris, Linux) without any added costly client software packages.
