10kV ‘Compact’ Power Feed Equipment
• Compact design offering high accuracy, high reliability and
high power throughput

The range of DC to DC power supplies is designed for powering
undersea repeatered cable systems requiring very high reliability and control.
At the heart of the product is a 3kW DC to DC converter, based around a switch
mode push-pull topology operating at a switching frequency of 20kHz. Utilising
the latest power mosfet technology, efficiencies of 89% are achieved. The use of
digital signal processing technologies enables a single control loop to provide
a ‘seamless’ transfer between a constant current mode and a constant voltage
mode, and to enable a high degree of user control enabling a current regulation
characteristic of better than 0.2% over the full voltage range. Very high
availability is achieved through a unique method of duplicating strategic
circuits. Additionally, the design has a low component complexity and is modular
in construction to minimise repair time. Two power units operate independently
– both capable of the total output current, but only supplying half the
current in a normal configuration. In the event of a failure in one unit, the
second is designed to take over – thus supporting the full load. A unique
switching unit allows safe access to the depowered unit for any maintenance. All
control is carried out from the front panel. Consisting of an ergonomically
designed membrane containing tactile keys and a 10.4 inch thick film transistor
TFT display, it invites the user to operate the equipment through its use of a
carefully designed graphical interface with a simple to understand menuing
structure. Control of voltage, current, ramping, alarms, polarity, routing and
many other features are available. A QB3* interface is incorporated into each
power unit for network monitoring via a Submarine Management System (SMS).
Various management scenarios can be facilitated by the SMS. The equipment is
designed to power into a cable system. However, a variable test load is
incorporated to enable testing without access to the cable. The load can be
varied over the full range of the power feed. The unit is housed in a separate
cubicle together with facilities for terminating optical fibre cables and
monitoring system and station earths. The flexibility of the standard power feed
equipment allows for adaptation to various optional system configurations
according to specific project requirements.
