Product Name: Alcatel-Lucent 1620 Light Manager
Product Description
The Alcatel-Lucent 1620 Light Manager (LM) is a DWDM terminal for use in repeatered submarine cable systems. It can be used on systems operating at N x 10 Gb/s, either as an upgrade for existing systems, or as a terminal for new systems.
Benefits
Capability to grow up to high capacities
Ability to transport legacy 2.5 Gb/s traffic without the need for an expensive MUX/ADM
Support for future traffic types (e.g., ITU-T G.709 and Gigabit Ethernet)
FEC coding gain reduces the number of repeaters needed, while a low overhead produces the narrow spectrum signals, which give best signal packing within available bandwidth
High equipment availability when using 1:N equipment protection. Alternatively (or additionally) a scheme using a diverse path could be implemented to improve network availability
Reduced need for floor/rack space
Reduced number of spares needed; easier replacements -- no need to select the correct wavelength
Less expenditure on power plant and air-conditioning
Using the 135x NMS (which can manage other Alcatel-Lucent transmission products) and sharing common interface specifications makes it easy to create a network with a mix of different network elements, e.g., mixed terrestrial and submarine to produce a city-to-city link
Compatible with all Alcatel-Lucent submerged units, but also supplies C-OTDR access to allow system connection without interogation/response supervision. (Nearly all suppliers provide C-OTDR paths in their repeaters, so C-OTDR represents an industry standard technique for checking levels and continuity)
Features
Supports up to 192 wavelengths, with potential traffic capacity determined by line parameters such as bandwidth, SNR, etc.
Concentrator to give 4 x 2.5 Gb/s clear channels
Future support for ITU-T G.709 and Gigabit Ethernet
Enhanced SFEC offering a net coding gain of 8.5 dB with 7 percent overhead
1:N equipment protection option
Compact design
High level of integration and tuneable lasers
Low power consumption
Managed by Alcatel-Lucent 135x Network Management System
Supports Alcatel-Lucent submerged monitoring system and has access for C-OTDR (Coherent Optical Time Domain
Reflectometer)

More Compact
Unlike previous equipment (which has one card for FEC encoder,
one for FEC decoder and so on) the Alcatel 1620 Light Manager SLTE integrates
all the basic tributary functions onto a single compact card. With the
possibility of putting up to 64 tributary cards into a 300x600 mm rack, the
equipment is considerably more compact and has lower consumption than previous
generation terminals.
Use with New and Old Fibers
The architecture is designed to be able to exploit +D/-D fiber,
which can offer benefits for long distances and high capacities, and also
requires less dispersion compensation than NZ-DSF. However, it is also well
suited for use with NZ-DSF systems, including adding capacity to systems which
are already installed. Depending on length, a tributary unit producing CRZ
signals may be needed.
New Interfaces
The Alcatel 1620 Light Manager SLTE provides interfaces for SDH
(ITU-T G.707 STM-16 and STM-64) and the equivalent SONET rates. It also includes
interfaces compliant with ITU-T G.709 OCh and Gigabit Ethernet formats.
Forward Error Correction
The Alcatel 1620 Light Manager SLTE uses an advanced FEC code
which offers 8.3 dB of net coding gain (at a delivered BER = 10-13) while only
requiring a 7% overhead. This means that the signals are transmitted at a rate
of 10.7 Gbit/s, resulting in a relatively narrow optical spectrum.
Traffic Protection
For traffic security, line amplifiers are dual pumped; either
pump may be replaced in service without affecting traffic. As an option, a
protection switch can provide 1+N channel protection, covering failure of any
tributary unit to give very high availability.
Network Management
The Alcatel 1620 Light Manager SLTE is fully managed by the 1353
NM, an efficient and powerful equipment management system, common to all members
of Alcatel’s optical family. Comprehensive network monitoring, supervision and
control of the overall network are provided by the Alcatel 1354 SN
Company Details
Formed from the merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent combines two entities that share a common lineage that can be traced back to 1986, when Alcatel’s parent company, CGE (la Compagnie Générale d’Electricité), acquired ITT’s... more
