Alcatel-Lucent 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact

Product Name: Alcatel-Lucent 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact

Product Description

Alcatel-Lucent 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact
The Alcatel-Lucent 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact(EMC), part of the Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) family, is an ideal space-saving, next generation, multiservice building block for CPE and access layer applications in the metropolitan and enterprise network. Due to the super compact mechanism design (1U height), the product offers customers space and power consumption savings as well as significant cost savings.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1642 EMC is designed to handle network access, CPE applications and enterprise implementations at STM-1 (155M) with aggregation features for low speed rate signals such as 2Mb/s. The Alcatel-Lucent 1642 EMC is capable of handling data scenarios and support a maximum of three STM-1 (155M) interfaces plus 14 x E1; offering service providers a flexible solution to meet the increased interface requirements for metro access, CPE and enterprise premise applications.

METRO ACCESS

The extension of SDH benefits to the customer premises and business sites is now an established concept. Compact optical-equipment installation for leasedline and business services provided to medium and large businesses is a reality in many access networks. The benefits can be summarized in the extensive endto-end path control and monitoring capabilities offered by SDH networks. Adopting the SDH technology is worthwhile even for the delivery of Ethernet services because it brings the benefits of SDH to the transport of data services. The variety of existing and future interfaces and services can be easily mapped into the SDH transport layer, adding the reliability and flexibility of SDH transport and providing a future-safe investment for new services. The Alcatel 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact (EMC) is an ideal multiservice CPE for the delivery of Ethernet, SDH and other data services

The main application areas are:

> Delivery of Ethernet/SDH services

to customer premises

> Local and metropolitan rings

> Point-to-point links with intermediate

drop/insert and/or regeneration stations

> Always-on, mission-critical communication

ETHERNET – INTERCONNECTION

Data-aware features, integrated into the Alcatel Optical Multiservice Node (OMSN) family through integrated service adapter (ISA) plug-in modules, fully address today’s technical requirements and future service needs in providing telecom operators, service providers and public/private companies with the latest, future-safe optical provisioning platforms. The Alcatel 1642 EMC features an Ethernet/Fast Ethernet card for the transport of highly reliable, frame-based data interconnections in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and shared-bandwidth ring applications. In-service bandwidth on demand is supported, allowing flexible increments of optical bandwidth during live network operation. The capability to map Ethernet flows into multiple SDH resources using virtual concatenation (e.g., one Ethernet flow into n x VC-12 or n x VC-3 routed in diverse paths) dramatically boosts the survivability of the user data connection in case of network failure. Through the integration of Ethernetswitching capability on the Alcatel 1642 EMC Ethernet card, not only point-to point, but also point-to-multipoint applications and shared-bandwidth rings can be implemented. This integration drastically reduces the resources necessary to connect several customer sites and private/publicoffice business locations for Ethernet LAN interconnection services. Network-infrastructure owners mustmanage and transport new Ethernetbased, revenue-generating, value-added services (VAS) at the lowest cost per bit. This is especially true in the access network where bandwidth is limited. Ethernet services, such as LAN extension, enables content delivery, corporate video communications, browser-based and voice applications (traditional or over IP). A growing number of medium and large companies are extending their local area network (LAN) to the MAN and WAN, enabling Ethernet services and missioncritical communications over long-distance optical connectivity. The Alcatel 1642 EMC’s shared-bandwidth ring allows multiple users accessing the ring to share the bandwidth, using, for example, only 1 x VC-3 on each link for Ethernet traffic and leaving bandwidth for other revenue-generating services. The Alcatel 1642 EMC Ethernet card gives service providers (see Figure 2) and public/private companies optimized Ethernet LAN interconnection services with incremental investments, exploiting the existing SDH infrastructure. This avoids the deployment of unnecessary overlay infrastructure and ultimately reduces both CAPEX and OPEX.

FUTURE-SAFE

The Alcatel 1642 EMC provides 2 x STM-1 (2 x 155 Mbit/s) line interfaces; 14 x 2 Mb/s, full non-blocking, low-order and higherorder SDH matrix; clock reference and equipment-control functions; all concentrated in a dense 1 unit shelf. The shelf is physically formed in two parts. The right provides STM-1 and 14 x 2 Mb/s (2 mm HM connector) interfaces and holds the central functions. The left provides one slot for an optional tributary board. The system may be configured, for example, as an STM-1 add/drop multiplexer (ADM) with a termination capacity of up to 42 x 2 Mb/s drops for metropolitan networks, or as an STM-1 terminal multiplexer (TM) with 14 x 2 Mb/s and 8 x E/FE interfaces, used, for example, to link several large offices to an enterprise network. The SDH cross-connect matrix provides full connectivity at VC-12, VC-3 and VC-4 for any possible configuration. STM-1 interfaces are mounted on modules that allow for a flexible combination of optical ports (any short- or long-haul type) on the same unit. The Alcatel 1642 EMC has a symmetrical architecture, enabling its application as a TM, or an ADM, in spur or ring topologies. All traffic ports (PDH, Ethernet or SDH) of the same type have the same functionality and behavior and there is no inherent split between tributaries and aggregates. This means it is possible to cross-connect all traffic ports at VC-12, VC-3 and VC-4 levels. With its flexible features, the Alcatel 1642 EMC is also ideal as a multiservice transport node. In terms of hardware, the Alcatel 1642 EMC has a centralized control  architecture that limits the presence of processors and software to the main board. Tributary cards have no on-board processors and may be reused from one piece of equipment to another, or retrieved from stock without concern for software versions. The Alcatel 1642 EMC also offers local and remote software download. In addition, customers can also monitor subnets formed by the Alcatel 1642 EMC, even through a multivendor network. Whether in telecommunication- office environments or at enterprise locations, the Alcatel 1642 EMC has the right powering solution (DC or AC) and optional power redundancy to provide optimal equipment protection. Concerning traffic protection, subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) and linear multiplex section protection (MSP) are provided for improved traffic availability, allowing the Alcatel 1642 EMC to be inserted directly into access rings or to be connected to access rings via pointto- point unprotected or protected links. SNCP also allows for end-to-end protection of SDH paths or dual hubbing to two distinct central-office ADMs. The Alcatel 1642 EMC paves the way to build unique optical network infrastructures that support optimized transport and integrated networking functions for data applications — for example Metro Ethernet. Thanks to its super-compact mechanical design, the Alcatel 1642 EMC can be easily integrated into other service nodes, such as 2G/3G mobile base stations, digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs) or voice-access remote nodes, etc., to provide a total solution. The Alcatel OMSN family consolidates the vast experience gathered by Alcatel in optical-network architectures through hundreds of thousands of installations worldwide, making Alcatel a truly reliable partner.
