Product Name: CARDIOVASCULAR
Product Description
Tepha is using its technology to develop several products for use in cardiovascular applications. Products currently under development include pericardial patches, heart valves, vascular grafts, and cardiovascular stents. Key benefits of the Company's technology in the development of these applications include the ability to produce biocompatible absorbable polymers with desirable combinations of elasticity, flexibility, and strength.
Tepha's technology allows surgeons to use a patient's own cells in combination with a scaffold of absorbable biomaterial, which can be implanted and not only function properly, but also guide the regeneration of new valvular tissue. In recent studies, surgeons and scientists at the Company and at our collaborating institutions have demonstrated that such tissue-engineered heart valves functionally resemble native valves as they continue to remodel after transplantation. The studies indicate that Tepha's technology promises a potentially more durable alternative that could eliminate the need for subsequent operations and/or the need for anticoagulant therapy, which is required of most patients receiving mechanical valve replacements.
In another cardiovascular application, research to develop a new tissue engineered patch indicates that Tepha's technology can permit the viable design of vascular tissue substitutes with the ability to regenerate, remodel, and regrow; hence offering substantial advantages over current nonabsorbable patches. In animal studies undertaken with Tepha's polymers, no bleeding occurred from the suture lines upon implantation, highlighting the compliance and elasticity of Tepha's absorbable polymers.
Tepha's new flexible and elastomeric absorbable polymers allow for tailoring of the properties of biomaterials to specific application needs. Our patented core technology allows us to engineer these biomaterials from an extensive material design space with properties suitable for use in a wide range of cardiovascular products.
Company Details
Regenerative medicine – the use of products to restore, maintain, or improve tissue function – is still a relatively new industry. When Tepha was formed, relatively few major companies had programs in this field. Recently, the... more
