Air Preheating - General

In modern industrial furnaces and many chemical processes, the exhaust gases leave the working area at very high temperatures. This leads to a high heat loss. If the heat of the exhaust gases is utilized, considerable savings of fuel are possible. This is very easily achieved by means of recuperators, i.e. heat exchangers where the combustion air is preheated by means of the hot exhaust gases and thus a part of the otherwise lost heat is fed back to the furnace or process. If fuels with a low calorific value are used, the required process temperatures can often only be reached, if the air or the heating gas is preheated. In this case, the use of a recuperator is absolutely necessary, irrespective of considerations in terms of savings.

Convection Recuperators

These units have been developed for the heat utilization of heavily dust-laden flue or process gases with temperatures of up to 1100 :C. The combustion air can be preheated up to 900 :C. Cleaning is possible by means of steel shot cleaning units or steam jet systems. The supporting tube plate must often be constructed as a cooled double bottom when the inlet temperatures of the heat transferring gas are high and heating temperatures are at the same time also elevated.
