Product Description
Lockheed Martin’s Silent Sentry® uses innovative
Passive Coherent Location (PCL) technology to provide an all-weather, passive
detection and tracking system suitable for real-time 2+D to 3D
air surveillance of all aircraft types, including Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV),
fixed and rotary wing aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Silent
Sentry utilizes a physically small, low-power processing system, which operates
autonomously once deployed, providing accurate updates on all tracks once or
more per second.
Passive sensors like Silent Sentry offer the following
advantages:
- They can fill gaps in active surveillance radar coverage
(e.g. at low altitudes, in difficult terrain), as well as simultaneously
providing coverage throughout large volumes of airspace at higher altitudes.
- Silent Sentry can be deployed covertly and
non-provocatively, because it does not radiate, and has no environmental
impact, which not only significantly reduces the vulnerability of the
system, but may also reduce friendly host country concerns.
- Silent Sentry updates target position and velocity for
every detected aircraft in real time. Currently this is once per second, and
update rates of up to six per second have been achieved.
- Passive surveillance systems can be used to cue active
tracking radars, thereby allowing the more vulnerable active sensors to
remain electromagnetically quiet.
- Silent Sentry will cost less than traditional radar systems
to buy and operate, because it is based on Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS)
office and radio receiver equipment, and doesn’t include any transmitter
equipment. Silent Sentry will easily benefit from improvements in
performance and reductions in cost of COTS components.
A passive sensor system is an attractive adjunct to a
predominantly active air surveillance sensor suite.
