Product Description

In addition, SmartStamp also provides valuable business information for the user, as each transaction is logged, the service can provide data such as postage activity broken down by sender and destination. This allows the account holder to keep track of how postage is used
and help them to budget future mail shots.
Customer-facing Solution
Lockheed Martin UK is the prime systems integrator for this contract, working in
close partnership with GFT UK, which will provide the customer-facing software
for the solution. Royal Mail intends to link the SmartStamp service to its national mail-processing system.
This is not an isolated solution but an example of the kind of service that
is enabled by Lockheed Martin's Adaptive Pipeline Management System (APMS). This
is an incremental road map that combines savings from connectivity with the
ability to access and respond to an individual customer's requirements -
known as adaptive services. And at the heart of this road map lies a strategic
recognition platform that is able to extract more value from a Post's existing
infrastructure, providing Posts with improved access to pipeline information and
the ability to use that information to generate alternative value streams from
physical mail.
Royal Mail has already introduced this kind of recognition platform with its
Address Interpretation (AI) platform, also developed by Lockheed Martin. The
application of this technology, suitably enhanced, to the SmartStampTM
service demonstrates how the technology, as part of APMS, is not tied to one
solution but is a strategic asset that can be leveraged in many ways. 
SmartStampTM is a good example of the kind
of customer-facing adaptive service that can be enabled by APMS, and it
represents the gateway to a variety of future sender and recipient-controlled
services. This ability to focus on the individual customer is made possible by
training recognition technology to respond to an individual's adaptive service
preferences.
Online postage has the potential to add several business
benefits to a Post, such as improved bilateral customer relationships and
retention through the ability to gather and process more information about both
sender and recipient behaviour. By ensuring that mail items always have the
correct postage, SmartStampTM also protects
Royal Mail's revenue.

Once online postage is effectively integrated into a Post's pipeline and
compatible with the recognition technology platform, it could deliver
significant processing improvements alongside access to richer data on both the
mail piece and the individual customer.
