G-STAR GPS Anti-Jam Solutions

Product Name: G-STAR GPS Anti-Jam Solutions

Product Description

As the concept of network-centric warfare becomes more and more a reality, the role of Global Positioning System satellites becomes increasingly critical to the many platforms that rely on it. The threat of interference -- intentional or unintentional -- is real and must be addressed.

Lockheed Martin has responded to this threat with a unique anti-jam (AJ) technology -- G-STAR -- a production proven family of solutions that provide highly effective digital AJ for any platform that relies on GPS. Flexible and scalable, G-STAR is designed around a suite of reliable "building blocks" that can be quickly adapted to meet the requirements of each platform.

Modular Design Approach

Building Blocks
All G-STAR products are based on these key modules:

  • High Dynamic Range RF Front-End
  • Digital Beamformer
  • BANDIT ASIC
  • GPS Receiver (optional)
  • Multiple I/O Choices

In addition, we have worked closely with the GPS vendor community to ensure that the GPS receiver functions seamlessly with all of our G-STAR products.

High Dynamic Range  Radio Frequency Front-End
Today's digital AJ requirements demand an RF design with a broad sensitivity range. To meet that challenge, Lockheed Martin has developed circuitry with the high dynamic range required to pass the jamming signal through with minimal distortion (necessary for later AJ processing), while protecting sensitive components and allowing precise control of signal level into A/D converters.

Digital Beamformer
Our Digital Beamformer, based on Spatial Temporal Adaptive Processing (STAP) technology, combines multiple digital signal processing  (DSP) techniques to deliver the most advanced GPS signal protection available. G-STAR is capable of rapidly adapting to a dynamically changing GPS interference environment by simultaneously forming multiple beams on the satellites of interest, while nulling the interference. The result is a system that provides highly reliable GPS signal protection under the most demanding situations.

BANDIT (Beamforming and Nulling DIgital Technology) ASIC
Our Digital Beamformer is based on our BANDIT ASIC, which is at the heart of every G-STAR product. By investing early in our BANDIT ASIC engine Lockheed Martin has developed the G-STAR architecture, which offers immediate advantages over commonly used Field Programmable Gate-Array (FPGA)-based architecture, including:

  • Best value performance
  • High reliability
  • Reduced power consumption
  • Small footprint
  • Light weight

Multiple BANDITs can be ganged together in the digital beamformer to provide a wide range of GPS AJ protection including full multi-beamsteering capabilities.

GPS Receiver Integration and Backward Compatibility
The GPS receiver plays a highly critical role in the effectiveness of any AJ solution. Wherever possible, we have located the GPS receiver within G-STAR. However, in some platforms, locating GPS receiver within G-STAR is not practical. In either case, G-STAR provides multiple output alternatives ranging from full multi-beam output to RF output that is fully backward compatible with any GPS receiver.

Real Time GPS corrections
By using data links to provide real-time corrections, we have shown the ability to significantly improve accuracy. As platforms and munitions adopt these data links, Lockheed Martin will continue to invest in this trend to improve performance of our solutions.

Module Integration and Design Process

To provide maximum design flexibility and re-use, while providing for forward compatibility as components improve, the Lockheed Martin G-STAR team has worked to design each module to integrate seamlessly with the others. Through a series of product design, development, test and verification cycles, we have refined our modules to balance various cost and performance trade-offs, while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Simulation and Design
As we have refined our designs, we have developed, validated and enhanced our extensive simulation capabilities as well. Through simulation, we are able to evaluate the environment of the target platform and determine the optimal configuration to meet operational requirements. Armed with this information and based on our scalable modules, we design and develop a G-STAR solution that is scaled to meet the performance, interface, packaging and cost requirements of the specific customer.

Standardized Products
Our standardized products are easily tailored to provide best-value solutions for various applications, including:
