Voice solutions

Product Name: Voice solutions

Product Description

Telephone

We provide telephony via satellite, connecting remote users to the terrestrial public switched telephone network (PSTN). Simply add the international dialling code (00) and country code to the number and dial as you would on a normal phone.

For telephone solutions see:

Live broadcast quality audio

This is high-quality audio suitable for long periods of listening. The quality level is achieved through digital compression via audio codecs (coder, decoder). Compression techniques include G722, mpeg-2, and APTX, providing varying quality as a trade-off to coding delay. Typically, radio stations use ISDN codecs to transmit live reports from the field or run outside broadcast from a remote location. When ISDN is not available or unreliable, Inmarsat can be used as a hand-carried solution or add-on to a radio car. For live broadcast solutions see:

Audio streaming

This is one-way audio feed distributed via the Internet or corporate LAN using Internet Protocol (IP) and played on local software such as Realplayer, Windows Media Player or Quick Time. Quality is good over relatively narrow bandwidth links and has been adopted by radio stations to expand their reach. As with video streaming, audio streaming offers low-cost point-to-multipoint (from one to many) distribution.

For audio streaming solutions see:

Multiplexed channels

This enables you to fit multiple voice and data circuits over a single data channel. Audio encoding techniques are used to digitize each voice circuit to a required compression level. This digital information is then combined into a single data stream and passed over an appropriate data channel.

As the first voice circuit is picked up, a data connection is automatically established between the field and base multiplexers. Subsequent voice circuits can be picked up and dropped as required within the available bandwidth.

In addition to carrying voice calls, most units allow you to utilize the remaining unused portion of the channel for regular data traffic, with bandwidth varying dynamically. This shared data channel can provide substantial cost savings on individual per minute services and often forms the hub of a remote site's communications network. Primarily used within government, oil and gas, and large corporations.
