Active Sensors

Product Name: Active Sensors

Product Description

Radar, with its remote sensing capabilities for detection and screening, is the primary electromagnetic sensor. Millimeter wave Millimeter Wave radiation readily penetrates through plastics, clothing, luggage, paper products and other non-conductive (non-metallic) materials. This property makes MMW a key technology for security applications. In addition, there exist spectral bands in the MMW regions with very low water and oxygen absorption; making this type of sensor very suitable for long distance remote sensing (see figure below).

An important trend in radar technology today is the drive toward multifunctional system combinations operating from the same platform, perhaps even through the same physical aperture. For a security application, this could be a combination of radar surveillance with RF communication links at different RF frequencies and various wideband systems. The benefits of such combinations are clear in terms of reduced real estate, opportunities for electromagnetic signature control, and lower costs.

Xytrans has developed a multi-channel MMW sensor, which combines multiple radar functions with modern communication to produce a shared sensor. Sharing the data from all of the existing radars in the vicinity and fusing the results to eliminate duplications or resolve apparent contradictions can construct a single radar view of the covered space.
