STMicroelectronics has devoted considerable research and development resources to the design and production of high performance, low-cost sensors. These sensors offer system designers the real possibility of making their products more functional, more reliable and easier to use.

ST produces a family of proximity detectors -- integrated circuits designed for metallic body detection. These act as oscillators, sensing variations in high frequency eddy current losses.

Targeting high-performance, cost-effective and compact sensors, STMicroelectronics successfully investigated a new technology called MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems). The technology reuses silicon processing techniques to design micro electro-mechanical devices sensitive to vibration, acceleration, displacement, rotation and inclination. This research opened the door to a new generation of motion sensors.

ST has entered another market segment with the development of industry standard, precision analog and digital temperature sensors. These temperature sensors feature lower power consumption and some unique packaging options.
