Open Office 3.0 is released

:: 14 October, 2008

The third version of the free suite, Open Office 3.0 is now available in its final version. It brings many improvements but not great news for PCs at hand, however, expected compatibility with the latest suite of Microsoft Office 2007. Macs are more spoiled with a natively compatible edition.
Open Office, continued providing free word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, a database manager and drawing software, continues its evolution. Concurrent head of the Microsoft Office suite, it offers little of the same functions.

Version 3.0 is distinguished by the previous sentence, the presentation was not much changed. But functions have been improved in many places, such as the ability to display multiple pages with Writer (word processing) or display 1024 columns Calc (spreadsheet).
Version 3.0 adds compatibility with the new file format promoted by Microsoft, OOXML, used by the 2007 Office suite. Open Office adds a new 1.2 ODF (Open Document Format).

On the site of Open Office, several versions are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. For Mac users, the novelty is a complete compatibility. Open Office 3.0, in fact, does not require the X11 software module, which allows to run applications written for the standard of the same name. Built into Mac OS since version 10.5, it was essential to previous versions of Open Office. The 3.0 should be faster on the Mac.
