Google Ten Years of Searching
:: 21 September, 2007
The deposit of the domain name Google.com on September 15, 1997 marked a stake in the history of an Internet still incipient, but at the time, nobody could guess yet the extent of the seism which had been just started by its inventors, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
The name, imagined the previous year by the two accomplices, students at the university of Stanford (California) and old both 24 years, took as a starting point “Googol”, which symbolizes in mathematics 10 high with the hundredth power (or 1 follow-up of one hundred zeros). An index which said of it long on the intentions of the originators, if however somebody were interested there…
Those concretized on September 7, 1998, with the launching of the site in version beta. Of one surprising sobriety (it will be never abandoned), this one was articulated around a search engine built around a revolutionary and innovative idea for the time, consisting in seeking on each Web page the bonds towards other sites and extending this research indefinitely, in order to exponentially increase the number of referred sites.
That went beyond any hope! On September 21, 1999, the site gave up its provisional statute of “beta” whereas the number of referred pages did not cease increasing to reach the half billion in 2000, 1,6 billion in 2001, 4,2 billion in 2004 and 21 billion in 2005.
The world of Google
But the galaxy Google, it is also an impressive series of services appearing at a rate amazing in the wake of famous Google Toolbar suggested (some will say imposed) in 2000. More remarkable still, the firm of Mountain View, whose at the same time hard and financially difficult beginnings in a garage appeared already well far, could innovate in perfect adequacy with a financial strategy resting on a new vision of the Web. Exploiting the data provided - voluntarily or not - by the Net surfers to direct publicity on a case-by-case basis, it initiated what one calls today “targeted publicity”.
Among the many services set up by Google, , emergent inter alia Gmail, e-mail software characterized by a volume of individual filing gigantic for the time (2004) of 1 Go by subscriber; Google Desktop Search (even year), Google Print, Google Maps which, always in 2004, preceded henceforth celebrates Google Earth appeared the following year, without forgetting Google Talk, an interesting initiative enchant in competition with MSN of Microsoft, and Google Video in 2006.
We could not however be complete without detailing the phenomenon Google Earth which, appeared in 2005, was to only precede with him a whole series of services related to the observation of the Earth, of its resources or to even follow the progression of the electoral scores on line, as it was the case at the time of the French presidential last! But Fascinating support on our small bluish planet, this service was to extend soon to the Moon with Google Moon, then to rebound on red Planet by proposing Google Mars, and to spring in major space with Google Sky, a display device of cosmos in line to make fade jealousy certain software specialized.
But it is not finished…
Recently, the Google octopus attacks competition while aiming very high. Thus, while joining CapGemini, one world leaders of the council in management and data processing departments, the firm was introduced into the sector of the office automation continuations on line with Google Gears, directly competing with Office Live of Microsoft whose fury is hardly dissimulated and clearly confirming the intentions of its leaders. The startup of a software of presentation in line, which should appear soon, must constitute the keystone of this building and definitively sit the reputation of Google among the software publishers, with a future which is announced frightening if one considers the experience and the know-how gained by the repurchase of other companies such Blogger, Picasa (2004), YouTube, JotSpot (2006), DoubleClick (2007), and it is far from being finished.
One could not speak about Google without evoking the last initiative of his originators. “Google Lunar X Prize”, it is its name, is a contest equipped with a price of 30 million dollars intended to reward the first private company which will manage to dispatch a robot on the Moon, able to move and to retransmit images with the Earth. A whole program! And in ten years?
