Spain will launch a second satellite of ground observation in 2012
:: 30 July, 2007
Spain will launch a second satellite radar of observation of the Earth, the “Seosar”, which will support the “Seosat” of the Ingenio program and will have primarily military applications. It is Juan Nebrera, the president of the Spanish association of the companies of the space sector ProEspacio which confirmed it in a press conference.
“Seosat” - red-baptize like “Talent” in its presentation the last week by the president of the Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and “Seosar” they will be the first net Spanish satellites that will orbit the Earth from 2010 and 2012, respectively. First it will mount an optical and infrared instrumentation for ground observation, and the second, of military use, it will be equipped with a radar system, the only device of both projects that will count on concerned technology. Both devices will comprise of European network GMES of coordination of climatic, environmental data and of security against catastrophes, and in which in addition to our country and THAT, only Italy and Germany contribute own satellites.
The new satellite will use the technology radar, which will be however more advanced than that of Seosat (optical). This last will be launched in 2011 and will be followed by Seosar one year afterwards.
The space sector in Spain has known a considerable growth for already several years, the invoicing in this sector reaching the 439 million euros in 2006. It currently employs some 2451 employees, that is to say 12% of more than in 2005.
News Inside News:
The Spanish space industry already leads projects of Telecommunications and Earth Observation -
The space industry in Spain maintains its growth, that it will be seen strongly impelled by the development of satellite SEOSAT of Spanish manufacture, according to the last numbers and data of the Spanish space sector and the main missions in which participates facilitated by ProEspacio. The development of SEOSAT, in phase of consolidation, will remarkably increase the annual invoicing of the Spanish companies of the sector. The Spanish space industry has passed to be a mere supplier of equipment and services, to be able to lead projects in the areas of the Telecommunications and Earth Observation. By Rubén Lafuente.
The Spanish space industry maintains the important rate of continued growth that it has experienced five years in the last. According to the last data published by the Spanish Association of Companies of the Space Sector, ProEspacio, in 2006 the invoicing of the sector ascended to 439 million euros, which supposes an increase of more of 21% with respect to the previous year (360 million euros in 2005).
In that same year, the total volume of use of the industry promoted 2,451 employees, which supposed an increase of a 12% with respect to the previous year (2,199 employees in 2005). More of a 70% of the personnel used in the sector they are licensed, engineer and directive, a 22% are technicians, and only near 8% rest is personal administrative.
The perspective of growth of the sector, that invests a 15% of its invoicing in I+D, are very positive mainly thanks to the development of SEOSAT, a satellite of Spanish manufacture that will allow Spain to enter the select group of countries that will contribute their own satellite to the program GMES, whose objective is the development of a complex European system of observation of the Earth. In fact, according to President de ProEspacio, Juan Nebrera, the sector has predicted in 2007 to reach the 500 million euros of invoicing and to increase in a 10% his volume of use.
In addition, the Spanish space sector in the last exercise also has placed in orbit the governmental communications satellite SpainSat and has initiated the development of a great advanced satellite of telecommunications, the Amazon-2 de Hispasat.
Mars in 2009
During this exercise agreements with other space agencies for the participation in bilateral programs have been signed, among them the first agreement of collaboration has been signed by which Spain contributes to the NASA the Antenna of High Gain and the Meteorological Power station that will go mounted in Rover for the mission MSL (Mars Scientific Laboratory) that will be sent to Mars in 2009.
These projects will suppose a new impulse for the sector that will compensate the paralyzation of the European system of navigation by satellite Galileo, in that participate Spanish companies dedicated to the space.
This positive evolution also responds to the important public investing effort, that it has intensified in 2006, thanks to the increase of a 12.5% with respect to the exercise previous in the Spanish contribution to the budgets of THAT, the financing of the studies of viability of the national system of satellites of Observation of the Earth, and to the hiring of Projects within the framework in the existing bilateral agreements between the Space CDTI and several International Agencies.
Public support
The public support to the Spanish space sector is expressed in the “Strategic Plan for Space Sector 2007-2011”, elaborated by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism and the CDTI throughout the year 2006 clearly and that was presented/displayed the past month of December formally.
The budgets of the State for the space sector in period 2007-2011 ascend to 1,071 million euros and suppose a fort increase with respect to previous period 2002-2006. In addition, the maintained average increase of the Spanish contribution to THAT between 2004 and 2007 has been of a 14.3%, far beyond bases the one of the rest of countries pertaining to the European Space Agency.
Their industrial slope, the reflected lines of performance in the “Strategic Plan for Space Sector 2007-2011” affect, on the one hand, in harnessing the technical and organizativas capacities of the Spanish space industry to reach the technological leadership to international level in concrete areas, allowing thus to obtain and to maintain niches them of market of excellence and, by another one, in directing like contractor of the complete system, the development and the accomplishment of a Spanish satellite of observation of the Earth.
Spain, between the advanced countries more
The Spanish space industry already is working in the development of SEOSAT, the Spanish satellite of observation of the Earth, that is in phase of consolidation and that will suppose an increase of 70% in the annual invoicing in programs THAT of the Spanish companies of the sector, according to declarations of the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Joan Clos, to the InfoEspacio magazine, that Proespacio publishes.
The Spanish system of observation of the Earth by satellite will give answer to the increasing necessities of teledetección data and will allow Spain to have total autonomy and independence in the taking of images. These will be able to be applied in fields like the security, arrangement of the territory, management of natural resources or prevention of natural catastrophes, which will favor the promotion and optimization of the development in Spain of applications based on teledetección.
This project supposes an important impulse to the Spanish companies of the sector, since in addition to the fort increase in the invoicing, is predicted that it generates about 600 direct jobs and 200 additional use in the development of applications, in the industry and universities. In addition, SEOSAT will serve like element tractor, reason why it will increase the size critical of the Spanish companies of the sector, with the consequent increase of his competitiveness and its exporting capacity.
In addition, the development of a Spanish system of observation of the Earth, will suppose to enable the Spanish space industry to develop a complete space mission and this way, to be able to assume the maximum levels of responsibility in future programs of THAT and other commercial programs.
Great year for the Spanish space sector
During exercise 2006, in addition to the great newness that has supposed the beginning of an own Spanish satellite of Earth observation, they were entered up to five launchings of the most powerful version of Ariane 5 from the European Space Center in Guayana to orbit ten new satellites, among them Spainsat, whose putting in good condition was obtained throughout the month of April.
With these five missions without failure denominated configuration ECA of the thrower consolidates like a trustworthy alternative for the operators of international satellites and, therefore, it reaffirms its expectations of hiring in coming years, being this very good news for the Spanish companies that the manufacture and operations of the thrower participate in.
Within the Program of Observation of the Earth, in its meteorological slope, the most excellent mission was the launching, in October 2006, of the Metop satellite. One is a satellite of great size with a weight of 4 tons and a volume of 17.6 xs 6.6 xs 5 meters in his configuration in orbit, the second greatest one constructed in Europe after the Envisat.
The three Metop satellites in polar orbit will provide services of sequential form until year 2020. One is the European answer, through EUMETSAT and of THAT, to the more and more pressing necessities of weather data and prediction of tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados or floods.
A secondary function of Metop will be search and the detection of boats and airplanes in emergency situations, for rescue missions. Their speed of process and data transmission allows the distribution of the information in little more than 2 hours from their obtaining, and its technology on board makes possible the reception in small stations in remote areas and even in the sea.
Identification of exoplanetas
In the scientific scope, it emphasizes the beginning of the Corot mission, space reconnaissance of the Solar System. The objectives of this space telescope provided with two cameras are, on the one hand, the identification of exoplanetas, defined as planets located to the same distance of their star that the Earth of the Sun which would make possible the liquid water existence and therefore of life in its surface. And, by another one, to detect “stellar seismos” that they allow the astronomers to accurately calculate the mass of stars, its age and its chemical composition.
The undeniable advantage of Corot, when not being put under the effects of distortion of the atmosphere, is its capacity to detect solid rock worlds several times greater than our Planet. The experts trust finding of 10 to 40 great worlds similar to the Earth in each one of the observation sectors of Corot, that renew every 150 days.
Also during 2006 the hiring of a great advanced satellite of telecommunications, the Amazon-2 de Hispasat announced. All these missions represent, without a doubt, a great opportunity and a challenge without precedents for the Spanish space industry, that will allow him to reach the necessary maturity and the levels of competitiveness of the advanced countries more in space.

SPANISH SPACE SECTOR ANALYSIS FROM AN INDUSTRIAL POINT OF VIEW -
Societies in developed countries are mainly concerned with two objectives on the eve of the 21st Century. These objectives are also shared by the corresponding governments, which spend a lot of effort and resources to manage and control the scientific and technological developments necessary to meet them.
These objectives are the Sustainable Growth Planetary and the implementation of the Knowledge Society. The issues associated to both objectives are extremely complex. The search for a solution to these issues over the next years will come both from the development of new capabilities as well as from a renewed globally coordinated R&D impulse.
Space can play a decisive role in helping to reach these objectives. For this reason, space infrastructures will have to offer high value-added services.
