Propulsion, energy, environment: ICARE flies away
:: 16 July, 2007
ICARE (CNRS department Sciences and engineering and information technologies), was born on January 1, 2007 from the meeting of two clean units of CNRS: the Laboratory of aerothermic and the Laboratory of combustion and systems reactive. This regrouping makes it possible to reinforce the contribution of research the development of French aerospace technologies and to increase its European and international visibility. ICARE intervenes in the fields of the propulsion, energy and the environment. It undertakes its research with many academic and industrial partners and collaborates in European, national and regional programs .
In the field of the aerospace propulsion, the blowers and other test facilities of ICARE are exceptional and often single in Europe. In particular PEONY, test facility national on the space propulsion with plasma, constitutes the floret of CNRS in this field of very high technology. Programs are added to it on the liquid and solid propulsion for ARIANE 5, the propulsion aérobie1 at high speed for the demonstration program of hypersonic flight LEA, the propulsion by pulsated detonation or continues, and of the studies on the hypersonic flows for the atmospheric re-entries (Ground, Mars, Titan).
In the field of energy, ICARE develops innovating research programs national and Europeans concerning in particular: automobile fuels (reduction of the emissions and qualification of the biocarburants); production of electricity by gas turbines using of alternate fuels like the hydrogenated biogas, syngaz and other fuels. In the field of aeronautics, ICARE takes part in the French and European efforts for the qualification of a bio-kerosene. The institute in addition coordinates a Franco-Italian program on the production and the safety of hydrogen. In the field of atmospheric chemistry related to the environment, ICARE takes part in various European programs. The atmospheric room of simulation of ICARE belongs to the installations recognized on a European scale to carry out studies on becoming to it atmospheric various pollutant emissions.
ICARE also takes part in the European technological platform “Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants” (ETP-ZEP) whose objective is to prepare future technologies using fossile fuels without emitting CO2. They imply the development of new technologies of combustion to facilitate the CO2 capture: oxy-combustion for the process “captures post-combustion” or combustion of hydrogen for the process “captures precombustion”.
