Manual to the outskirts of a town

Manual to the outskirts of a town

:: 06 June, 2007

Any social or architectural qualities are denied to the outskirts of a town - often also dye or easily verächtlich briefly „Agglo “mentioned -. Usually it is therefore no popular topic. For Städtebauer this area is however most interesting and exhibits a large potential. This shows a study, which was locked in the context of the network city and landscape (NSL) at the ETH Zurich. (1) Professor Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani and its research group of Institut for town construction speak rather worth-neutrally of the suburbanen area. They mean with it the indistinct range, into which the city changes into the surrounding landscape. This area continues to increase and ever more important. “The rapid urbanization of our landscape is not simply a fate, which must be accepted. We must together-move and manage the existing innovatively, if we do not want to produce a periphery, which is rural neither urban nor”, so Lampugnani.

Filters suburbane characteristics

The research project concerns itself with the question, which qualities the suburbane area can to exhibit and be obtained like these is. For this purpose in the inhabitant of zurich Glattal - a typical dye region - were made and analyzed different situations concerning town construction. It the researching was noticeable that certain characteristics in to suburbanen area arise repeated that there are however no concrete terms, which these describe. They redefined therefore sieved suburbane town construction categories: Knot, Relikte, settlement islands, remainder surfaces, Zerhäuselung, transit areas and supercomplexes. Settlement islands are e.g. spatially isolated things in the suburb structure, as one often finds them with closed housing estates. With these categories any suburbane area can be characterized, which facilitates its evaluation and the discussion over the outskirts of a town.

Historical models use

Now the researcher team of the ETH looked for Zurich in the whole world for successful examples from the history of the town construction. Situations concerning town construction were selected, with which a broad consent over their qualities exists.
From this five strategies for the suburbanen area were out-distilled: Creation of identification places, elucidation of borders, cross-linking, creation of coherency and stabilization of the public area. Applied to the individual town construction categories, these strategies lead to a higher quality of the area. Settlement islands can be revalued e.g. by the stabilization of the public area. The outskirts of a town is not to become simple however the new city centre. Elements of the dye area are kept conscious or even still stressed. The periphery exhibits thus different qualities than the center; it should be the center however functionally, social and aesthetically equivalent.

Descriptive photos, practical manual

The researching attach great importance to descriptiveness. They played the categories and the suggested strategies to the end at nine case studies from the smooth valley completely concretely. Plan overlays and Fotocollagen show, which effect with the strategy selected in each case can be obtained, without it concerns thereby a material, draft concerning town construction. With „the manual to the outskirts of a town “problem zones show themselves simply and to point possible formative proceedings out. The practical manual for all, which would like themselves to argue with the suburbanen area, is meant: Specialists of the space planning as well as the town construction, in addition, from the policy and not last inhabitant inside and inhabitants of the edge of city. “The manual with its strategies energizes to use and perhaps reduce thereby errors with complex problem definitions the historical experiences”, means Lampugnani.
