International Exchange Program by Tokyo Tech International Office to celebrate the 120th Anniversary of Japan-Thailand Diplomatic Relations

Thailand is one of the ASEAN countries with remarkable growth. Thailand and Japan are in very important relation in political, economic and cultural aspects, and have long history of Official Development Assistance and industrial investment. As for Tokyo Tech, we have long history of cooperation, collaboration and exchange with Thai universities and institute on educational or research activities. It is expected that exchange of not only teaching or research staff but also of students should be promoted. Under this background, to take the opportunity that the year 2007 is the 120th anniversary of Thailand -Japan diplomatic relations, Tokyo Tech planned and designed this program JAYSES with Thai universities' cooperation.
Under JAYSES, Tokyo Tech students will visit Thailand and conduct activities together with the students of Thai universities as follows.
Visit Japanese and local industries, government organization, universities, institute, JICA projects
Learn how ODA(Official Development Assistance) or private investment affect Thai society and industries through hearing and interviewing
Understand how the Japanese technology and methodology are applied to the practical stage as appropriate technology.
Experience the dynamism of growth in Thailand.
Observe Thai society under various points of view through visiting different types of organization.

Program (To be done in English.)
1. Preparation
Study about the organization to visit, Thai culture and history, English and Thai conversation. Visit organization in Japan related to Thailand - Japan cooperation.
2. Study Visit
1) Observation: Thai universities, research institutes, Japanese and local industries, JICA projects.
2) Discussion: Exchange opinion and share idea among students in different background in groups according to their interests and impression after the observation.
For example
- Advantage and disadvantage of Japanese ODA.
- What is the best appropriate technology for Thailand?
- Effectiveness and challenge of multilateral cooperation.
3) Presentation: Each group would make presentation to appeal their suggestion and recommendation to the guests from Thai universities, government or industries.
3. Reporting
After coming back from Thailand, participants should make post-discussion proceedings and conduct final report meeting in Tokyo Tech campus.
Activity
(1) Visit Japanese industries in Thailand
To study applied technology and localization.
(2) Visit Thai universities
(3) Visit JICA Projects
To learn how the technology transfer has been done through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
(4) Visit Thai local industries
To comparatively study with Japanese industries in Thailand.
(5) Group discussion

(6) Presentation

- Establishment of intimate and international studentsf network among top-ranking universities in the region
- Benefit not only for the students but also for participating universities
Trip period / Expense
26 Aug. (Sun) - 4 Sep. 2007 (Tue) 9nights 10 days
(might be changed according to the availability of the flight)
*All of the travel expense should be burdened by own account of participants (about 100,000 JPY).
However, students with active participation (starting from preparation to the final reporting) can be awarded financial support upto 60,000 JPY.
[Attention: International students should be responsible for the matters regarding the stay permit and re-entrance permit of Japan and also tourist visa to Thailand. Some students who are supported by scholarship may be restricted under condition or limitation to trip abroad. You should check by yourself and agree with all the conditions caused by the participation of the program.]
Application
1)Requirement: Any Tokyo Tech regular students (undergraduates, master's and doctoral students).
2) Screening: by documents and interview.
3) Deadline for documents: 31 May 2007 (Thu)
4) How to apply: Write your [Name, sex, nationality, date of birth, department/faculty, essay "My expectation for JAYSES program" within 250 words in English], and send to the e-mail address below.
