The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a SOFTWARE ENGINEER III, Broad Institute, to implement and maintain software and database systems that support the management of genomic research experiments and data. Will work as part of a team designing and developing complex data management, workflow, and data analysis systems; develop modules to load laboratory data, perform data analyses, and ensure database integrity; work with users to gather requirements, incorporate feedback, and provide support; develop and deploy new and existing systems; work closely with users to obtain requirements and propose the algorithms and designs necessary to achieve goals; provide user support for complex modules (typically responsible for one or more); investigate technical options for implementation and make recommendations; document designs, issues, and other technical information for modules; plan project requirements and provide accurate estimates of work; update plans and identify technical issues; proactively improve software process and methods and assist more junior team members in improving their skills; and handle other tasks as needed.

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree and five years of development experience or equivalent combination of the two; demonstrated expert knowledge of Java and APIs; knowledge of relational databases and SQL (especially Oracle); and excellent communication skills. The following are plusses for this position: knowledge of Python/Jython, Perl, PHP or Groovy; experience with server-side Java frameworks such as Spring and Hibernate; knowledge of client-side web programming (Javascript, AJAX, GWT, jQuery); experience with laboratory information systems (LIMS) and robotics; and prior involvement or interest in biology or genomics domain. Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and shift priorities rapidly.
