DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE: Oversee the
day-to-day operations of the Cheeseman Environmental Study Area (ESA) and
associated indoor and outdoor laboratory classrooms. Assist students and staff
in performing technical work within this specialized learning environment, (the
Kirsch Center and the ESA). Develop and explain instructional materials and
demonstrate learning exercises to aid in student comprehension of course work.
Provide information to students regarding available resources and encourage
their participation; respond to student questions and problems. Present
information to students and members of the public on tours or at open houses.
Establish and monitor facility schedules; train and provide direction to student
or volunteer personnel. Maintain the learning environment in a safe, clean and
orderly condition; modify and enforce procedure and policies. Maintain the
native plants in their community settings. Conduct general area preservation
procedures in an outdoor laboratory environment, such as planting, weeding,
irrigation, pruning, composting, mulching, pond, stream and trail maintenance.
Maintain a mapping program to manage the plant collection. Create and manage
computer files to record assigned activities such as number of visitors to the
site, service contracts and related documents. Maintain the historical archives,
databases, and maintenance schedules. Order, receive, catalog, inventory and
store supplies and equipment. Troubleshoot problems and make minor repairs and
adjustments to equipment. Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and
respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and
cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college
students, faculty and staff. 2. Any combination equivalent to an Associate's
degree in a related field. 3. Three years related work experience. In
addition, successful candidates will demonstrate the following: 1. Knowledge
of California native plants and associated communities; including propagation,
cultivation and ongoing care. 2. Knowledge of sustainable practices in
environmental stewardship, including green building design. 3. Knowledge of
environmental interpretation techniques with native plants and animals. 4.
Knowledge of biodiversity and the life cycles of plants and animals. 5.
Knowledge of plant and environmental laboratory maintenance techniques and uses
of tools in each area. 6. Knowledge of computer techniques utilizing Word,
Excel, data processing methods and data entry techniques. 7. Ability to manage a
scientific collection of native flora and fauna. 8. Ability to set up and
operate specialized and highly technical departmental equipment and machinery.
9. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 10. Ability to
provide instructional assistance and technical advice to students and staff with
patience, courtesy and good interpersonal skills. 11. Ability to display
initiative and exercise good judgment in coordinating instructional facilities
and materials. 12. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective
working relationships with others. 13. Ability to prioritize and schedule work
efficiently. 14. Ability to understand, interpret and apply Division/department
rules and policies.
