In telecommunication most of the technical words are not easy understanding to others. They always use briefed word of a long name. In case of VLR is also same. VLR means Visitor Location Register. VLD data base contains all Mobile station (MS) i.e. mobiles that are currently located in the MSC location area or SGSN routing area respectively.
VLR contains temporary subscription needed by the MSC or SGSN to provide services for visiting subscribers. When an MS roam into a new MSC location area or SGSN routing area, the VLR of that MSC or SGSN requests and stores data that the MS from HRL. When the MS makes a call the necessary information for that call set up will available immediately.
That is the main function of VLR.
