H31 Hydraulic Ram Pump Description The water hammer effect, due to the momentum of a long column of moving water in a pipe, is used to advantage in the hydraulic ram pump. Although not usually classed as a pump; it may be considered as one if the column of water in the supply (drive) pipe, moving at low velocity, is considered as a plunger which, actuated by its own acquired energy, forces water from the supply into a delivery pipe. The TQ H31 hydraulic ram pump has been designed to operate from the TQ H1D Hydraulics bench. It is supplied in three major assemblies: the header tank, the pump and the interconnecting pipe work. The header tank is mounted approximately 2M high on a wall, pillar or similar feature. The overflow pipe from the header tank is passed through one of the overflow holes in the H1D top. An inlet pipe and a supply pipe are also fitted to the header tank. The inlet pipe is connected to the hydraulics bench circulating pump and the supply pipe is connected to the ram pump assembly, which is located on the hydraulics bench. The ram pump has a supply pipe, fitted with an inner and outer valve, an air vessel- to reduce hydraulic shock- and a delivery section. The outer valve is weighted so that it falls open during no flow conditions, whilst the inner valve remains closed. During the experiment the water in the header tank is maintained by the hydraulic bench circulating pump. When the water flowing in the supply section reaches sufficient velocity; the outer valve will be snapped shut and a pressure wave will be transmitted back down the supply section. This increase in pressure will snap open the inner valve and admit water into the delivery section. Once the pressure wave has passed; the inner valve closes and the outer valve opens. The cycle then repeats itself. The outer valve is fitted with a weight platform, so that it can be loaded with the weights provided; thus the pumps cycle times can be changed. Range of Experiments Demonstration of the use of water hammer effect to produce a pumping action. Ancillaries None Services Required H1D hydraulic bench. Tender Specification A unit designed to demonstrate the way in which the water hammer effect can be harnessed to provide a pumping action. The unit shall be capable of operating from the H1D Hydraulics Bench. It will comprise of: a header tank giving a nominal 2m head of water - supplied by the hydraulics bench circulating pump, a pump consisting of an outer valve, an inner valve and air vessel with pressure gauge, and a delivery section. All relevant pipe work, couplings and adaptors will be supplied.
