This will assess the cooling ability of an AMD heatsink and fan combo from a company called Spire. Their latest offering, the “Fridge Rock” is meant to replace stock Heatsink Fans (HSF’s), as a more effective, efficient and quiet solution. To be fair and accurate in my review I chose my test equipment carefully. Knowing that the earlier T-Birds were furnaces I chose a 1.2 GHz Athlon to set the benchmark for “hot CPU’s”. I refuse to use the stock AMD heatsink since in my experience it keeps the CPU at a temperature much higher than I care to expose it to, so in compromise I compared Spire’s offering to the next step up; the Thermaltake Volcano 5. The Volcano 5 is a basic aluminum heatsink if I have ever seen one, and to be honest it is better than most HSF units found in OEM computer systems. The Volcano 5 results therefore can be viewed as results typical of the most average of HSF units. Specs Socket A / 370 Cooling kit Dimensions Heat sink : 12VDC Fan : 78×73×49 mm (l × w × h) 70×70×25mm Bearing Two Ball bearing Rated speed 3500 ~ 4200 RPM +/-10% Rated power 3.60 W Noise level 27.0 ~ 36.0 dBA Air flow 21.70 CFM at 3,500 RPM 27.19 CFM at 4,200 RPM Current 0.30 A Life hours Two Ball: 70.000 Features Copper base, Temperature control & Auto restart Application Intel : Pentium III ~ 1.4 GHz (FC-PGA2) Pentium III ~ 1.13 GHz (FC-PGA) Celeron ~ 1.4 GHz (FC-PGA) AMD : Athlon XP ~ 3000+ (Barton) Athlon MP ~ 2600+ (Thoroughbred) Athlon XP ~ 2800+ (Thoroughbred) Athlon XP ~ 2100+ (Palomino) Athlon ~ 1.4 GHz (Thunderbird) Duron ~ 1.3 GHz (Morgan) Thermal resistance 0.52 °C/W Thermal type T725 or Stars 420 (white grease) Clip model 0606624 Packaging The Fridge Rock came in a nice and small blue box. Covering the top and bottom of the unit was a nice plastic sheath. Included in the box was a small syringe of their version of thermal grease. It appeared somewhat like Arctic Silver, but I never trust that stuff anyway so I chose to use Arctic Silver 3. Under the plastic sheath was a thin plastic tab covering their thin stock thermal pad. If there is something I like less than untested thermal grease it is grimy thermal pads. They melt and harden every time you restart, and often times end up leaking all over the surface of your processor generally making a mess and reducing thermal conductance.
