Details of Aero L-39 Albatros

The L-39 Albatros, built by the Czech firm Aero Vodochody, a military training aircraft, which was demilitarized and later converted to civilian use.

Background: The L-39 military
The L-39 was born in the offices of Aero Vodochody studies in 1966 when he was replacing the L-29 Delfin, the same manufacturer. The goal was to build an economic and agile, to become the training aircraft default of the Warsaw Pact. It was therefore necessary to put an engine powerful in a small fuselage profile. The device configuration is two seats in tandem, metal monoréacteur, subsonic. The first flight of the Albatross was conducted on 4 November 1968. Although the main mission of the L-39 is coaching, external attachment points allow the aircraft to fill spots ground attack (CAS) and recognition.

A total of 2244 L-39C have been delivered, mostly to the Soviet Union (2080 units). The albatross is entered service in 1972.

The end of the Soviet Union marked a halt to the company: sales fell by 80% to 90%. No other L-39C is out of production lines since 1991.

He was replaced by the L-59, L-139 and now by the L-159.

The conversion to the civilian use

The fall of the Soviet Union, which has severely affected parent firm Aero Vodochody, has so far not affected the career of the Albatross, which has diversified.

One of the most obvious example is the patrol Breitling. This is the only private patrol aerobatics, and fly on L-39C. However many private bought an L-39 for fun, or even companies that offer their customers a day in the shoes of a fighter pilot.
