A-12 Avenger II

Details of A-12 Avenger II

The A-12 Avenger II was a project developed in the United States by McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics to build an aircraft airborne attack any time to replace the A-6 Intruder in the United States Navy and the 'United States Marine Corps.

Design
The different designs and models of the aircraft revealed a wing flying in the shape of an isosceles triangle with a cockpit ready located at the tip. The aircraft was designed to receive 2 General Electric F412 turbofan-GE-D5F2 without post-combustion of 58 kN thrust. It should be equipped with 2 missile AIM-120 AMRAAM, 2 AGM-88 HARM anti-radar and a complement of smart bombs and non-guided bunker in his house. The A-12 was nicknamed the "Flying Dorito".

The aircraft suffered many problems during its development, especially with the materials and when the projected cost for each aircraft reached 165 million dollars, the project was canceled by the Secretary of Defense at the time Dick Cheney in January 1991.

The Navy decided to buy the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which has now replaced the A-7, A-6 and F-14.
