 The operation of a 2-stroke petrol breaks down as follows: Admission: the plunger down and discover the inlets. Fresh air and gasoline are pushed into the cylinder.
Compression: the piston back and closes the inlet and exhaust. The air is compressed and the pressure rises to about 10 bars. In the crankcase, the inlet is uncovered and the plunger sucks fresh air.
Relax: the candle lights the mixture. The pressure is about 80 bars. The piston goes down and gives power to the crankshaft. In the crankcase, the inlet closes and the piston compresses the air.
Escape: the plunger down and discovered the exhaust port. The exhaust gases s'évacuent themselves of the pressure difference. Fresh air and gasoline are pushed into the cylinder. The cycle begins again.
Therefore 1 return of the piston, or 1 lap engine cycle.
The shape of the exhaust has the distinction of being opposed cones, creating a pressure against back to the cylinder and reducing the loss of fresh gas.
To increase its range of use scheme, admission is by depression or valve rotary valve and exhaust can be fitted with a valve or a chamber of resonance.
