Ablation (Astronautics)

Details of Ablation (Astronautics)

Ablation, in the space, is the action of a stream of matter or radiation on the surface of a body, causing a loss of substance to it by chemical decomposition, change of state or mechanical erosion. The removal of materials deposited on the surface of a body reduces the heat for a limited time.

A stream of material or radiation ablation is called the ablative.

Ablation due to irradiation by photons is called photoablation.

The principle of ablation has been used for example by the Soviets to return to Earth in capsules Luna missions. Thus, the capsule (uninhabited) of the Luna 16 mission was the first spacecraft to return samples of the surface of the moon. Luna 16 suffered a deceleration of more than 350 g with an angle of re-entry into the atmosphere above 60 degrees. The temperature was warm important supported by a thermal ablative type whose sublimation, ie the transition from solid to gas, absorbed heat. By comparison, the braking in the upper layers of the atmosphere of the Apollo missions, led to a deceleration of 6.5 g.
