The computerized critic of art

Details of The computerized critic of art

Work of art or crust? Hour decides it the computer.

Some investigators of the Dartmouth College, in the New Hampshire, have developed an algorithm for the authentication of the art works, in particular painted, press and designs. The software uses images digitized of the works that it wants to consider and it automatically analyzes to the blows of paint-brush and other characteristics of the design, in order to verify if they correspond to the style of the artist.

"In the art works it is possible to find the characteristics only of a painter", explains Hany Farid, one of the authors of the program. "It is the same system with which one is associated writer to the choice of particular words or cadences". The algorithm has been experimented on celeberrima "the Madonna with Child" of the Perugino. The software American has confirmed that that already was suspected, and that is that the artist umbro was helped in the work from some its students.

In the same way it has been able to establish that, of thirteen pictures attributed to fiammingo Pieter Bruegel the Old one, five are work of imitatori. Hour the investigators say themselves ready to resolve many mysteries of the history of the art, even if for the experts they are shown still skeptical, like Nadine Orenstein, curatrice of the collection of designs and press of the Metropolitan Museum di New York.

The method elaborated from Farid and its collaborators consists in digitizing the painting to examine, to divide it in sections and to pass it in one series of nine filters, transforming it in a mathematical model. The scope of the software is "to capture the mathematical property of an artist, invisibili to the human eye", says Farid. Laurence Kanter, curatore of the Metropolitan Museum di New York, answers: "Also a man can calculate with the mind. What it counts is like interprets the data ".
