A zygote is a cell that is formed when gametes - usually a female egg cell and a male sperm cell - fuse. This process occurs during fertilisation. The nuclei of the two cells fuse to produce a zygote with twice as much genetic information as each original sex cell. A ZYGOTE is formed when a man's sperm FERTILIZES a woman's egg. It is the first step in what will later develop into an EMBRYO, and then a FETUS, and finally a baby. A zygote is the product of the fusion of an egg and a sperm. It contains two copies of each chromosome, one from each parent. Egg and sperms cells, on the other hand, each contain only one copy of each chromosome. The zygote develops into an embryo.
